I just thought I'd mention that ATi has much better driver support under vista. and that nVidia's G80 drivers suck in linux. and xp x64.
Vista Sucks and anyone who likes/cares about it sucks. Most mainstream nvidia cards work perfectly on linux. However, the G80's arent that far away to being the same.
nVidia - Owns you and everybody else in this world. Why? Because I find it simply the best Graphics card ever made in the world. I have used it and its like AWESOME.
no vista does not suck, driver support for it sucks vista and Creative being the primary culprits. and nVidia cards DO NOT work perfectly under linux. Ever hear of the texture overload bug? results in completely black screens, you have to restart xserver to temporarily fix it. Please actually USE linux before making a claim. The fact of the matter is that both companies have a long way to go with linux support.
ATI's 2900 series is not garbage the performance is getting better and better with drivers and I very well think that the 2900 series will beat 8800 in dx10 due to the 2900 series being shader AA resolve ready and the 8800 being not but if I had to pick between the 29001GB and 8800gtx 640mb i'd go 2900 because I beleive it will end up being better
okay if you like ATI thats probly the first GFX you got so your sticking with it if you like nvidia thats probly the first GFX card you got it depends on the people around you and what you first used if your parents or relatives says ati sucks or nvidia sucks your going to go what with they say most likely or if you got a computer when you where six and it was ati or nvidia thats probly what your going to want again... they're both good just depends on how you grew up...
I like ATi. I've owned over half a dozen nVidia based cards. I currently own a GeForce 8800 which ueses nVidia's most powerful chipset out. many are just hypnotized by their marketting campaigns and the mindless rants of people going "OMFG my 7300LE is 1377" newsflash, the 7300LE sucks and i just sold a 7600GT which is around 3 times as powerful as the 7300. Apparently the 7600 isn't good enough for me. they're both companies who want to steal money from your bank account at the end of the day and every other engineer in both companies has worked for the other at one point or another. Merged Post: I hold the opinion that it's too early to judge the 2900s performance. It is getting ebtter and better. from my understanding the only downfall it has is that TSMC had manufacturing problems and couldn't get it out onto the 65nm process so they had to use a older less advanced process. The R600 design definitely has potential. then there is the matter that M$ specifified that DX10 do software based antialiasing as opposed to hardware based AA and while ATi followed that spec nVidia did not and microsoft gave in and added support for hardware based AA effectively ------ing ATi over.
I've always used Nvidia who have never let me down so no need for me to switch companys but I would never say no to ATi.
I'm somewhat a linux user and xelink is completely right. They don't work perfectly under linux as I think it was ubuntu or SuSe.
