I'm planning on buying a new computer soon since my current is many years old and it's pretty slow. I was looking at some new computers (don't say to make my own) and most of them come with Vista which I don't really need. I was thinking of getting XP first then maybe upgrading to Vista sometime later (I won a free Ultimate edition) but I was wondering if a comp will do better just running XP than Vista?

I was looking at the min requirements for Vista and don't really want a comp running it when I can have it running XP and performing better, if that's true?

    depends on your setup
vista is mostly a bit greadier with RAM. also drivers for nVidia cards suck.

I would also say that vista have a better gestion of dual core cpu + if your cpu is 64 bit and you buy the vista 64 bit, it could run faster than xp.

So it won't make much of a difference if I have a good setup?

    will in some cases.

    again different drivers different APIs

2+GB RAM should leave you fine though. excluding RAM hogging games.

if you game a lot, go XP regardless.

My computer is running on Vista Ultimate and it only has 512mb RAM. I'd say its pretty smooth.

then you don't run much and it would be pretty smooth on almost any OS.

also, why spend the money for ultimate when the system itself is worth less than the OS is, even with the OS installed?

Vista does use more memory but the biggest problem right now is support like drivers and some software isnt Vista compatible examples would be Adaware and Ulead Cool 3D dont work with Vista. I would suggest at least 2gbs of memory I had my new computer with Vista for 2 weeks but I havent tried any games yet on Vista so I cant give you my feedback about the gaming end with Vista
