Server

hello, I would like to know if there's any good guide on how to build and configure a server step by step.

I would also like a list of the characteristics this kind of computer has to have and why.

What type of server a game server like counter strike or a proper server?

 

A good internet connection
A seperate T1 line is good. Speak to DDL, he's good with this stuff.

 

well, you dont wana skimp out on the cpu and memory on a server

I heard the intel xeon processors are good server cpus, but dont quote me on that

 

depends on the type fo server but generally

buffered, registered ECC, etc. on the memory
high binned CPU(Xeon or opteron, though you can go athlon 64 or Core 2 if money's an issue)
RAID array
potential of solidstate memory


it really depends on the use though.
tell me what it's used for,

 

it's for a school project so I just really need the theoric specs

edit: it is supposed to host a small site

 

4GB ECC RAM
dual opterons
2p board
no GFX card(int GFX)
6 disk raid array

and that would do it. add in other vital parts(PSU any optical drives peripherals) and you're done.
