My brothers computer has only 128MB of RAM at the moment and I feel bad every time I visit. My computer is a piece of junk as well, but at least it has 512MB.

Anyway, .eclipse got very quick help on this subject here so I thought I would go ahead and ask as well.

What would be the best RAM for a fairly decent price? 1GB would probably be good.

You really just need to find the right store, like a store for computers only nothing like Bestbuy but somewhere more for computers and then you can find alot of different cheap RAM...good luck!

should suffice. if need be, get two.

not entirely sure if his system supports 512mb RAM but it should.

also phant, most retail stores prey off of the computer illiterate who know nothing. They usually rip you off horrendously. There are case by case exceptions where you can get a good deal, but usually these are few and far between and you need to know the approximate market value of the item you're purchasing.

    FYI bestbuy sucks major balls

EDIT: just reread the post, here's a cheap 1GB stick

again I'm not too knowledgeable of the 845s compatibility with "large" memory capacities. It's from the pentium 4 era and I avoided p4s because they generally sucked.

I dont go to stores anything like mircocenter or bestbuy etc... this small store in my area which is run by this really funny chinese guy sold me like 6 of 512 mb for like 15-20 bucks each, so I thought it was a bomb deal, I used 3 but gave the rest to my cousin in return for a used hp laptop, w00t!

tigerdirect.com Have great prices on PC 2700 ram. Just note that the 2 links xelink gave youa re the wrong speed ram. They will work in your system fine, regardless you are paying more for the higher speed ram that your computer won't be able to use. Basically it will take the higher speed ram and downclock it to the 2700 speed, versus the 3200. Just make sure your computer can support that much RAM. I would tell you but none of the pics you agve me says anything about how much your PC will support. Your best bet to find that out is to look at the user manual if you still have it, or try looking the model pc up on dell's website, or worst case scenario, call dell and give them your model number and ask them. If they offer you ram, if it's at a decent price, take it. Older dell computers like that are quite proprietary, you could buy a stick of ram and it could likely not work. Some older dell computers will only accept dell ram. On the other hand sometimes, more often than not, you can get lucky and have a higher quality brand work. Just know that you've been warned, there is a possibility that any ram you get other than dell ram, may not work in the computer.

I basically view the PC ratings as bull----. I can run my PC4200RAM a lot faster than some PC6400kits can, though i can also run it a bit slower.

    as said, PC ratings=bull----.

also, if you check, that was the cheapest RAM on newegg and probably about as cheap as you'll get. I'll admittedly say that I did not check e very site out there, but ehh.

it's similar to how sdRAM is more expensive than DDR RAM right now even though it's inferior, don't know why, don't know how but it is. It's also similar to how DDR is more expensive than DDR2 even though it's inferior.

    Thanks for all the help.

Edit: Here is my computers info straight from the manual.

    Architecture: DDR SDRAM

    Memory Connectors: 2

    Memory Capacities: 128-, 256-, or 512-MB

    Min. Memory: 128 MB

    Max. Memory: 1 GB

    Memory Type: PC2100 (266-MHz) or PC2700 (333-MHz) DDR SDRAM (non-ECC)

So I can get up to 1 GB as a long as they are 2 512 MB sticks.

This site has ones that are 100% compatible, maybe I can find these types cheaper on another site.

    check post I had before.

and yeah, half expected that. The PC mentioned was made in an era where 256mb was the norm and 1Gb was A LOT, I was unsure as to whether or not the memory controller even supported 512mbsticks, but fortunately it does. Heck even today 1GB is a lot(for general use atleast)

if you find cheaper, by all means go for it. his RAM is on the lower end of the spectrum, basically ANY DDR ram made within the last two years or so will be sufficient.

you'll have to ditch his old stick though.
