I'll admit: those used to be my favorite bands...

You should take a look into some other genres and maybe a few underground bands...

Start off with things not too drastic... You say you like Opeth and Cradle of Filth, so I take it you like Black Metal and Extreme Progressive Metal?

Take a look at my lil' list of bands I made a few pages back..it has a list of bands w/ their genre's... :)

Wow, I love people that think they are cooler because they like older bands that are more popular now than the ever were back when metal was still underground. And what makes you an authority on "Metal" that you can go up to someone and say you listen to "fake metal?" For all we know you could be a 15 year old kid that shops at Hot Topic.

Is a nice read for you, even though it doesn't have to do with either of the two mentioned bands, it still applies to your arrogance.

    For sake of the topic:
I personally enjoy black metal, martial, and folk metal overall. Off topic of metal, but I really like neo-classical and classical as well as crust.

Death metal is starting to get too boring to me; its the same breakdowns and the same growls.

P.S. Opeth was the band that started me into more underground metal, I saw them with Paradsie Lost and Tapping The Vein (who I think are past defunkt and didn't really like) coming up onto 4 1/2 years ago. And I borrowed my name from one of the songs. Not to mention seeing Dream Theater, Kings X, and Je Satriani in 2002.

Your calling me some punk 15 your old kid? Are you serious? And no I dont shop at hot topic, and have never been in one of those stores. See I like these things, there called girls, so I dress nice for them. And I can voice my opinion in any way I choose. Yes I do think todays bands are fake metal, they arent even metal, theyve took what is now refered to as the classic metal and turned it into crap. I didnt even read the article you linked me to because it had pretty much nothin to do with what Im trying to talk about, which is classic metal.

Obviously new grind/metalcore-infused Death is, but listen to some true Death. Don't listen to ---- like what All Shall Perish, Animosity, The Faceless, The Red Chord, etc. (despite them being pretty good technically).

Go listen to some Gorguts or some Assück, Cryptopsy, Decapitated, Necrophagist, Nile.

C'mon guys. Was this thread really started to argue about what is metal and what isn't? Because I'm pretty sure we all have ears and can at least pick out what people would call Metal... Right?

Seriously guys, relax. Just let people discuss what they like... Try not to get into lame arguments about the roots of Metal...Or about how nothing is Metal EXCEPT the roots.. Or whatever it is you guys are arguing about.

^^ Sorry if that's lame of me.. I just figured it was a waste of time arguing of what music is, or something like that...

Everyone is copying those bands, thats why new stuff is just as boring as the old stuff.

I'm suprised you mentioned Assuck with those bands.

I don't even listen to "All Shall Perish, Animosity, The Faceless, The Red Chord, etc." because they are all the same sounding. I can't listen to Malevolent Creation, Morbid Angel, or even CODC (even as much as I like them and the fact that they are a local band) for longer than one song anymore. And I never liked Death, but every once and awhile I listen to "Scream Bloody Gore" or something.

So, you've really never listened to any grind/metalcore-influenced Death? (not Deathgrind - totally different)

About Silent Civilian....another generic metalcore band with except with worse drums

Perhaps you'd find the more progressive or experimental Death metal bands a little more interesting. Atheist and Cynic made amazing music (same for Death's later albums). Alarum are good prog death, as are Hieronymous Bosch. For more tech influenced death, which is again totally different, go listen to Spawn of Possession, Psycroptic, Lykathea Aflame and Gorod.

I'm hugely into the more experimental side of extreme metal. I love bands like Ephel Duath and Psyopus for their crazy technicality, but also bands such as Amesoeurs, Peste Noir and Bergraven for their almost post-rock infused black metal.

yeah i dont mind a bit of black/death metal. just dependes on what mood im in really. i usually sway more towards the hard rock side of metal. i just like really hard heavy songs where the vocalist isn't screaming too much. i'll make sure to check out your list though for sure.
