RAM is used to run things, The more RAM you have the faster and more things you can load, This is also effected by CPU clock speed

To see how much you have press Contol + alt + delete and open task manager, Click on the performance tab and look under the box titled "Physical Memory" I have 522668 which is 512mb ram, I need an upgrade

thats 1GB of ram, its about average these days. Pretty fast, not stupidly fast, but does the job pretty well.

also, the more ram you have, generally, the smoother your programs will run.

if you have more RAM than you can use, then adding more won't do anything.

I have 4GB RAM and harddrive caching effectively disabled. I never really can use past 2GB. That's basically a few dozen high resolution PSDs a few games running in the background, firefox with 100+ pages in the browser cache. an instant messaging program and a media player open playing music.

You could open up your case.

Or you could do: Start -> Run -> type 'dxdiag' -> View 'Display' tab.
It should be the first item in the list.

Right click on your desktop > properties > settings tab > advanced
then the big tab at the top of the new window will have the name & info of your current graphics card.

just out of interest- why do you want a new graphics card?

I cant do either of those options because it says it has been canceled due to not being an admin. The guy who reformatted my comp is an ------ so we got screwed. Also i need a new graphics card because my comp wouldnt let me play F.E.A.R so before i get any new games i wanna make sure i got a good card for it.
