I have Vista Ultimate and I'm tired of all of the bugs in it and the problems I have with it so I want to completely reformat my hard drive and install XP Media Center Edition. The problem is that for some reason Vista can't find my CD-ROM drive and DVD-RW drive anymore (one reason why I want to get rid of Vista) so I'm not able to just put the discs in and install that way. Will the computer recognize the drives after I reformat and are there any programs that I can use to reformat Vista?

When you start your computer does it detect your cd rom and dvd? If yes, set in Bios Boot from CD and then it will start up from CD .

And yea, I also removed vista and installed xp back

    XP FTW !

yeah. as gac said. just set the boot sequence to cd-rom before you harddrive. should pick it up right away.

I'm doing it right now. It's formatting the partition that was already there so it can reinstall XP.

Good luck with that. I've accidentally screwed up with some reformatting in the past and its a bitch to fix. Accidentally did my whole hard drive into FAT32 somehow instead of NTFS. Took me forever to figure out what I'd done where I wasn't trying to install an OS on it, somehow XP wasn't picking it up or something.

ok now i have another problem........i got rid of Vista and installed XP again but now my internet doesn't work. when i try to install the software for the cable modem it says that there isn't a connection to the "ethernet card" yet i can still get on Xbox Live and on the internet from a different computer (what i'm doing now)

i tried connecting the cable modem directly to my pc and not going through the router and it still didn't work

btw...the computer i'm on now is a laptop with a wireless adapter so i know that there is nothing wrong with the router or cable modem

You have to setup a new connection sometimes. Control> Network Connections> on the left it will say "Create a new connection" Try that. Also install any drivers that came with your wireless adapter.

If it can't connect to the ethernet card, that means you need to install the drivers for the ethernet card. if you dont have the original disc, most of them can be found somewhere on the internet.
