Just tossing a few things together for a friend, he wanted me to verify with someone whom I trusted with computer parts, so... the technology forum it is.

He is trying to keep the system under $1000 (this is like $997 after mail in rebates).

    Mobo:

    Processor:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16819103771 (yes, I realize its an AMD, but benchmarks show it beats the C2D comparison, being the e6400 series).

    Memory:

    Video Card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814130074 (how will this run a 19" monitor running on 1280x1024 with games like F.E.A.R.?)

    Power Supply:

    Hard Drive:

    DVD-RW x2:

    Case:

Anything wrong with this current setup? Would there be any better peformance parts for the cost?

Personally, i think what you have is pretty much as good as it gets. Your ram looks solid as well as processor and i think that video card should be able to handle F.E.A.R just fine...

well i dont know much about amd so wont say anything on that. But the gfx card will run fear on that res without a problem on at least medium. the ram is a very good choice. I had the same dvd rom and had a lot of problems with it. had to send it back but im sure it was a faulty one. the case is good but you could save money of you get a cheaper one

Pretty nice config, but how about spending a little less on the case and power supply and a little more on the proccesor. If you would take a cheaper power supply, cheaper case and cheaper gfx card like ninja said, you could maybe afford this intel:

I was considering doing this, but the motherboard for intel based processors tend to be a little more pricey for the same quality.

Also, I am more than open to case suggestions, I don't really like that case, it just has great reviews. Something with a little more eye candy (NO LEDS EXCEPT THE POWER BUTTON, FFS) would interest me a bit more, and if I were to get the 8600, I would likely get the factory OC'd one, with higher speeds than the 8800GTX, simply less memory.

I was actually thinking about a little less eye candy :P. Don't really care about the outside of the pc :D.

Ow btw, I was just thinking. I've got a case left. You can have it for free, but you will have to come to holland to get it. Here's a pic:

awesome case you got there ...

but ehres a decent 8600(its got a fan and is about the same with a "superclocked" set up by the manufacturer

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150229

heres a decent case with some eye candy but affordable also and its full tower so theres more airflow inside the case ......

    EDIT

make sure the monitor thats going to be used uses DVI for hook up instead of VGA might be important to look at first

    8600s suck major.

an 8800GTX has a 384bit memory interface and 128 shader units
an 8600 has a 128bit memory interface and 32shader units.

admitedly, the 8600s can be clocked higher on both RAM and the shader units, but not 300%. 8600GTSes go for around the same price as a 7950GT but usually are less powerful.

my advice would be to go for an x1900XT, x1900XTX, x1950XT, or x1950XTX.
