    A strong, preferably branching storyline.
A chance to team up with other RL players and "quest" or similar.
Side quests, ranging from mini-games to whole epic journeys!
A detailed and realistic 'verse, with believable, fleshed out characters and races.
Selectable "jobs" or statistics, such as Ranger or Warlock, each with bonuses and set backs.
Obviously the basic RPG formulae, so random battles, battles with other human players, upgradable weapons, hit points, level systems, magic and healing and of course items.

It should also be deep, for instance having computer created characters with differing interactions depending on how you behave to them, or the ability to find your own food or build your own weapons. Possibilities to make it more unique, and something I often want in an RPG, is an animal training side of things; so, for instance, if you have the time you could catch a wild raven and train it, eventually creating a familiar of sorts that would aid in battle. Birds could be used as spies, hounds to find hidden items, bears as a deterrent for fights/battles, horses to ride and make exploring easier, as well as more unusual creatures, perhaps such as bats to scout dark caves for hidden dangers, or ferrets to steal needed items from within a home. Dunno, just an idea I've had for a while :)

an idea that many people before have also had, and used, just its very hard to do by yourself.
a project like that will take AGES.
he is doing it just for fun you know?
not for many sleepless nights in front of the pc coding and designing all that stuff by himself.

    oh i know!
    animal people!
with a dark plot involving the slavery of the human race under the .. beastmen
you play a lone human who escaped a slave workhouse. and finds his cliched fate to save the human race and restore natural order to the world.
the workhouse escape could be a tutorial.
the casino could be an underground human refugee place/a place you can go after acquiring a beastman disguise!
    :D

duh, you'd have to have guns in a cyber themed game like that,
maybe in a final fantasy style turn battle, when you shoot the gun, you have to aim and stuff

hmm...that would be a bit complicated.
sticking to turn based battles would be best, with leveling.

A plot involving slavery definitely. They're always shocking. Look at Tales of Symphonia.

I think guns would be a good inclusion. They give a unique technologically advanced feel to the RPG.
