I have a 7mb/s service from a fairly consistant company (ie, their ratios for 'maximum speeds' to their 'stabalized speeds' are relatively equal in proportion). However, I am only downloading at 70-90 KB/s. My mother, on the other hand, has a 1.5mb/s line, lives about 1 mile from my current residence, and has a stabilized download speed of 182 kb/s on the same computer, but a different router.

Is there anything I can do to help my speed become a bit more equally proportioned? Ie 700-850 kb/s? Or should I contact the company and ask them to check it out on their side? The service was bought within a week ago, so its potential to have flaws is quite large, just wondering if I can do anything, or if I have to contact them, and if I do, any particular questions I should ask?

I heard that you have to wait for a little while untill it settles out. How many things have you got on the net right now. like msn, firefox, yahoo, steam etc.
try closing everything that uses the internet, other than your browser and do a speed search, to the nearest server to you http://www.speedtest.net/ .
If you still haven't got good results, then give it acouple more days and then ring your ISP. If they say it's fine then the techies on this site will do wonders to help you useally :)

Thanks, and the only program I have running is MSN and firefox, all other services and programs that connect to the net are disabled, and it says my download is in the 600-700 range and my upload is in the 300-400 range, whereas my moms 1.5mb/s is in the 1300 download / 800 upload range.

At first look it would appear my account settings are at about 750kb/s due to proportionate speeds, but im clearly being billed nearly $60 for a 7mb/s connection.

I think it also matters about where the servers are from where your downloading. For example if your in the USA and downloading from a server in Japan then yeah your gonna have a low download speed because its far away.

Except the server I am testing it from is in Salt Lake, about 350-400 miles from here, and the speed was tested via the same server at my moms house as well.

    Anyone else have any ideas?
