How good would this computer be:

    Intel COre 2 Duo E6700
    4 GB RAM (Corsair)
    (Mainboard still undecided)
GeForce 8800 GTX (768 MB RAM)
    500 GB HDD SATAII

Would this be a powerful system or does anyone have any suggestions? My current one is a Pentium D 640 (?) with 2 GB RAM and a GeForce 6700 XL (128 MB RAM).

Is the 8800 really as good as ppl say?

well if your 6700XL is anything like the 6600GT(which it should be)

then you'd basically be getting a video card which is 5-10 times as powerful.

and FYI 4GB RAM is effectively useless. In 32bit windows(which I assume you'll be using) programs and the OS itself can only recognize 2GB RAm(PAE can make the OS use just under 4GB RAM but it's practically worthless since the performance hit associated with PAE is greater than the performance benefit)

in your case I'd just swap the CPU, motherboard and graphics card(and perhaps the PSU)

    To Xelink:

I have Win XP, 32 Bit, and Vista Home Premium 64 Bit, using both as dual installation

    To Coolguy:

Getting a completely new one since I cant upgrade my current computer because the built-in Mainboard sucks as well as the tower they used. there isnt even nearly enough space for the gfx-card (there is no other free slot for a 2-slot-gfx-card:( available). i couldnt even build in a 6800 because the gfx-cards are too large for the tower.

also the CPU cooler is too large and sadly cant be replaced by any other fan because of the way its mounted on the mainboard. all i could do is buy exactly the same fan again  . its a very sucking construction, so I decided to use my own knowledge to set a new computer up with the parts I want. Just to note: my current tower is a BTX tower and pretty small. there isnt much space to upgrade anything :(

Are you going to overclock? If yes, E6420, if no E6600. Get a 680i mobo. Try to get a kit which has D9 Ics. http://ramlist.ath.cx/ddr2/

and it's worse in the 64 bit version...

again, I adivse 2GB now and after you analyze your memory usage you can always get more later.

also what's you budget for RAM? how much per kit?

windows 32bit can utilise up to 4gb ram.
For the graphics card you dont need the 8800GTX, a GTS will suffice. Or go the ATI R600 route.

Kingston is very inconsistent FYI, they constantly switch ICs and swap PCB design. What might be a good kit under the first revision might be total crap under the 2nd or 3rd.
