im getting an error when trying to open a PSD, its about windows not having enough RAM to perform the operation. I'v never had this problem before and i have a gig of ram, any suggestions why this might happen? perhaps its a compatibility issue between me using photoshop 6.0 and hte PSD having been made in photoshop 7 or cs or cs2?

Is enough RAM going into PS?

Go to Edit>Preferences>Image & Memory Cache. Then, raise the memory percentage higher, which will make PS faster, but other programs slower...It's good if you just have PS open though, as everything will run smoother.

It could be a compatibility error, since I'm not sure if Photoshop 6.0 can open files from versions after it. I've only used CS2 and CS3 so I'm not sure. If re-installing it doesn't work, and you're sure you've got enough RAM, then it's probably a compatibility problem. You could contact Adobe via their website and ask them, but that could take a while.

why not just upgrade to CS2 instead of sticking with ps 6.0?
