Howdy, I'll get to the point.

My computer while running programs such as games or such, even including virus scanners will randomly shut down. Then after it has shut down it is extremely difficult to start up again. I've had this problem once before and reformatted my entire computer, wiped clean. For acouple months everything went smooth until about this week. The problem has returned and I'm thinking it's nasty virus. I've run Ad-aware, Spybot, AVG Free, McAfee (My Documents/Windows not C-Drive because takes to long and continues to shut down before complete.) They have shown up with 0 problems. So far by googling this topic most people are just having faulty power supplies and simple overheating problems with old fans or clog'd vents and even memory sticks. I don't believe this is my problem however b/c of the reformatting I did before. Any Suggestions?

Is AVG Free good Anti-Virus? I've heard mixed reports..

Is there an excellent Anti-Virus? (free)

I think I must have to wipe my entire computer clean once again. Even if I do this I want to be able to stop it in the future if the problem appears again with a good anti-virus. Anything you have to offer will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

i dont think its a virus, if it has trouble starting up, as in you pressing buttons but it wont, if it was a virus then it wont start at all, so probably the psu maybe im thinking? maybe overheating of hardware?

Well for the overheating, this just started recently again. Fan looks clear although I'm buying a can of Comp. Air soon and going through it all again. As for the virus thing...When I reformatted I could play anything do anything etc had no problems. (this was a long period of time, months)

ya, i would check your cooling like oni said. if the computer overheats, it'll automatically shutdown once it reaches a certain temperature and needs to cool down before it can start up again. if your cooling is not a problem, it might be your powersupply. see if you can find an extra one and hook that up.

Ran this program AntiVir and this is my result, somehow it completed. Should I worry about those 14 unscanned? I've also downloaded CCleaner and that cleaned out alot of junk on my computer and fixed minor errors but my problem still exists. When the weather turns for the better so i can take it outside for a good cleaning.

After that I heard something about This hijacker Program, saved log file. (/find 1b)
Wondering if anything here shouldn't be there?

Yes I have but I have a strong beleif it isn't hardware, since when I reformatted once before my computere was working fine. Reformatting just cleaned out my entire computer and I had to re-install windows but still everything worked 100% fine, no problems. Just want to make sure that I've done all possible before I move onto another step.

I don't know if this happens, but I guess it's possible...
After a reformat you accumulate more programs, right?

If you have say, 100 programs running, compared to 20 after the reformat, I guess it's possible that it's becoming heating quicker.

I'm not sure on that but it seems like a possibility.

So you're saying that reformatting helped the random shutting down. correct? if so, then please to reformat. I just think it is more likely to be a heating problem because you said that if you ran games or a virus scan, it'll shut down. Games and virus scans take up a lot of your CPU usage. More CPU usage = higher temps.

I suppose my theory about having so many programs now is a possibility then.
Try uninstalling some that you don't need then, and remove startup programs that aren't needed as well. (Don't uninstall the startup unless you really don't need them, but only remove them from the list of programs to start when you log on.)

Try a trial version of TuneUp Utilities or something and see if that improves it at all.

If not then I guess you'll have to reformat about 3-4 times per year.

Could be RAM related my computer shuts down like this also and i've looked into it and it seems like it would be RAM in most cases and others it was the motherboard. THe only known virus that i know that could shut down your comp would be a worm called lsasss(3 s's) similar to the computers lsass( 2 s's) but you said you reformatted so i think viruses shouldn't be the problem. Maybe its a certain site you go to if its a virus.
