heya im considering getting a laptop for when i go to uni in a bit over a year or 2, and i was looking for a laptop that could replace a desktop, so to say that can do games, work, run applications, etc anything i could need or want to do.

i just want to know if alienware laptops are a safe and good bet to go with on the issue, i heard people say its overpriced, some say they suck cause you cant replace laptop parts, but considering my standing point what do you think (and know of alienware?)

If you want a replacement desktop, look into Sony, Toshiba, Acer and yes, sometimes even Dell / HP.

Dell actually has fairly nice laptops, and if you can format and reinstall the OS with something you have (IE you bought Win XP ---) then you get rid of all the extra OEM retailer BS that Dell / HP, etc. loads on the computer. If you were going for desktop replacement, gaming machines, Dell still has their XPS brand computer (which is comparable to Alienware) and from what I have heard, Dell has fairly decent customer service.

They still remain as individual companies, Alienware computers are still more overpriced then their XPS counterparts, and have similar parts.

you can build a computer for 2000 dollars that is 20x better than a 4000 dollar alienware computer.

Acer has some nice laptops you can look into.

the word comparable would be mroe accurate than 0x better. Alienware has good stuff, they just overcharge for it horrifically. And that's after the price premium paid to get the good stuff.

Alienware have very nice laptops, but again, you are paying a hell of a lot.

look into toshiba, asus, hp, or acer.

toshiba have some very powerful models, but tend to look kinda cheap.
hp look amazing. but you do get a lot of marketing bull---- and needs a reformat after purchase. asus have good laptops with very good parts. but often lack the product diversity in the high performance models. acer has some very cheap and mobile laptops, but are in no way a high performance brand.

hope you can decipher some useful information from that.

is exactly on 2000 dollars, but you will most likely pay more from a retailer. totally top of the line really. but if you are buying in 1-2 years time, you'll be buying on a totally different playing field.

laptop technology progresses faster than desktop. not so much in large leaps, but in the fact, they are not exactly upgradeable. you can buy new better parts for em, but a complete gutting and replacing is nigh impossible.

beleive it or not, in some cases, Alienware laptops aren't really much more expensive than other's you just need to configure them properly and know how to do your own memory upgrades if needed.

Well its like this. Any well made product is more expensive then their competitors. Take Nike for instance, they have shoes that cost upwards of $150. On the other hand the same shoe made by say Starburry are made exactly the same, but they cost under $20. Now with Alienware, you are buying the "Nike" product. You can get the same product cheaper. But you always do have the bragging rights of saying you own an alienware where others don't.
