Well, as soon as my debit card arrives (should be within a few days) I will be getting a new desktop replacement laptop (1.66GHz C2D, 2GM Ram, 256 non-shared video memory GeForce 7400 GO with optional 335 MB video memory shared, 160 GB HD, 17" screen) but the issue I see with it is that it comes with Windows Vista Home Premium, which, to my knowledge, is a memory hog, has issues running certain programs, etc. (Yes, I know its OEM, but I don't care anymore, if you format it, and its a laptop vs a serious gaming computer, its not a huge issue). Now, I do have a legal XP --- disk that I can install, would it be a better choice to do so, or should I stick with the Vista pre-installed? Will formatting the drive and placing Windows XP --- on the computer void the warranty (on general standards, I mean, as obviously each company has their own warranty)?
i dont think installing XP would void a warranty, my mom just bought a new laptop that has vista on it and for the most part i havent run into any problems while using it (few driver issues but those will be fixed in coming weeks/months) if you are gonna try to game on it look for a list of vista compatible games cause i know there are a good amount of games that WONT work on vista. if you are willing to work thru the bugs/issues of vista then by all means get a jump start on getting used to it but if you want a more reliable/stable OS reinstall windows xp edit: here dem is a list of compatible games (for vista) http://www.thinktechno.com/2007/03/13/list...mpatible-games/
Thanks Oasis, unfortunately I saw this: Which is the main game that I play, and Diablo 2 (which has reported alot of issues unless a few things are disabled and the compatability is set to XP SP 2). I know the computer itself comes with built in system items (microphone, webcam, etc.) and I am not sure if the drivers are included on the side to install those, or if its built in, if I install XP ---, will I be able to run those fine if the drivers aren't on a disk? Also, since its OEM (despite being a Sony Vaio, once again, I know, slightly overpriced, but I have NEVER had an issue with ANYTHING Sony, and the couple of people whom have, have had GREAT service from Sony to help them out) it will come pre-loaded with lots of BS extra junk, which is another huge turn off. I like the basic OS with the bare necessities that I need, not all this other stuff pre-installed. If I could somehow install a legal version of Vista Home Premium without all the extra retail BS, then I may give it a shot, any clue if there is a way to do this?
Just turn of Aero, improves performance by A LOT! Driver Issues will be fixed, its just got the teething problems of a new OS, I'm not saying that Vista is better than XP, but in the ende we'll have to switch to it ;( If you re-install with XP, just get the drivers for your video card at the nVidia site, I check every now and then to get the most up to date drivers, but at the lower end updates do'nt come regularly.
well i think if you are gonna go with vista, vista home basic would be your best bet as the premium and ultimate versions are the same as basic they just are just raped with all the BS that you said you dont want. about the drivers, if you reinstall XP you should be able to find all the drivers you need for it (look for specifics of your vaio's hardware like the exact model sound card etc, then google it and see if you can find drivers for em. or just look on sony's site) about the warranty you can always call sony and find out or read thru all the fine print on the warranty card/pamphlet
Yeah, after reading that about 10 of the older games I play don't work on Vista, I think I will be working with XP --- for now until Vista gets sorted out and then I will switch back. Thanks for the help .oasis PS - Get on MSN more often lol
Just keep the vista install. There are a lot of tweak programs for Vista, if you are so curious about the performance. Vlite.com, etc. There are alot more out there. Try googl. 2Gb of ram will run vista smoothly.
I don't much care for vista. I'm running it now. My old system was.. XP Servive Pack 2 AMD 2600+ 1GB ram 80gig HD Nvidia 6600GT 128MB AGP 15 inch CRT My New Vista Premium AMD 4600+ 2GB Ram 360 gig HD Nvidia 7600GT 256MB PCI - E 20 inch LCD Wide Screen If you want performance for games stay with XP. On the game I usually Play. Enemy Territory. I was getting 60 - 100 FPS. On my new machine i'm lucky if I get 60. Sometimes it goes to 10 FPS. If you want performance, stay away from Vista for now. Specially if you like the older games like me. So basically i'm getting another harddrive and installing XP on it to run my games.
Just attack vista with Vlite..It can fit any vista onto a CD and will run on 256mb fine...Im in the process of doing it to my vista...will post some outcomes later..Vista has alot of stuff you dont need
10X better? Vista is better for SOME things. I have it, and I don't like. It looks nice, thats about it. But what I use it for I don't need all this "Eye candy" Crap. This is going to be like Ford Vs Chevy. Both make decent vehicles. But some have better features than others. If you play games and need, or want all you can get for them. Then I don't recommend Vista. I've been back and forth with Punkbuster for over 3 weeks with game issues. Missing Corrupt API functions. And numerous other errors. Its funny when they do game testing they dont tell you if PB was enabled or not.. Like in my previous post. I have a system twice as good as my old one but have issue because of Vista. It's you own preference. But i'd wait to upgrade till they do a Service Pack. http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/01/29/xp-vs-vista/
XP > Vista End of story Personally waiting for vista say 2years until they fix some major bugs/fixes XP --- still the best windows as of late - I seriously didnt like some of vista's stuff they got in there Friend lost sound TOTALLY - Plays 1 second and dies the next [brand new desktop PC] - GUI wise its good but i dont see anything else besides it DARKSTAR
