I just found out today that one of my best friends, Jim, has cancer. I'm having a hell of a tough time with it, and I was hoping some people might know anything that would help me deal with this. We find out tomorrow if the cancer has spread to his lungs and bone marrow, and if it has, he's got a 30% chance of survival. This kid is amazing, and he's the last person I'd think to ever get cancer. We're in this for the long haul, as he starts chemo Friday and it will last about a year. If anyone has any suggestions as for stuff my friends and I can do to help him, I'd really appreciate it.

Right now I'm thinking of getting wristbands with his name on them and selling them at school and giving the money to him and his family. My friends and I also are thinking about buying him a Xbox 360 and Live so he has something to do while he's not able to do other things.

Anything else you guys can think of, I'd really appreciate it.

    Please pray for Jim.

    Thank you everyone.

EDIT:The cancer hasn't spread to his bone marrow, and they initially thought it may have spread to his lungs, but it's only a very small amount and they should be able to control it. He's even coming to school for the first few hours tomorrow before he starts his first chemo treatment.

I can finally concentrate on things now without the nonstop worry for him, and I can't stop smiling. God I'm happy.

I know what it is like to have someone you know with cancer, my grandma had it and was lucky enough to live, but a family friend of ours was not and died a few months back. Dealing with it is probably going to be one of the hardest things to do right now. My only advice would be to visit him as much as possible and constantly pray for him.

Well, one of my best friends died last year at age 15 from cancer... It is very not common early... but it was very very hard... I spent about everyday with him for 3 months, and 1 day he was in the hospital.. spent the day with him there and I go home to bed, next day I get a call he didnt make it.... Pretty much I am saying, Spend as much time as you can with him, and do everything you can for him.. if you get some wristbands, I will most def. buy one..

Thanks guys, and I'm sorry for your losses. Now I know what it feels like I guess. It's going to be really hard to find time between his frequent trips to the hospital and my busy school and sports schedule, but I'm going to try to see him as much as I can.

Hopefully a sleepover this weekend if he's up to it, he had his bone marrow test today, and you seriously do not want to know how they do that. Most painful thing I can think of. Plus he'll most likely be all drugged up and stuff too, so we'll see I guess.

    Thanks guys

i think everyone in the world is affected by cancer either from knowing someone who has it or havin it yourself.

theres so much about cancer that we dont know, most of the cancers experts have no idea where they come from.

one way to look at it is instead of crying because he/she has died smile because they have lived.

we all die one day some sooner than others, just the way it goes :( and most the time its the good that die young ;(

i know that wont really cheer you up but its just something to bare in mind :)

Thanks guys. After a stretch of terrible news, we've finally found some good. REAL good news.

The cancer hasn't spread to his bone marrow, and they initially thought it may have spread to his lungs, but it's only a very small amount and they should be able to control it. He's even coming to school for the first few hours tomorrow before he starts his first chemo treatment.

30% is not 0% there is always a chance. My Grandfather also had a 30% chance when he was diegnosed in the 70s. He is now 85yrs old (still has it). Only time will tell what will happend to your friend. Never give up hope even when it's hopeless. I wish him well.

It sucks, dude, but I know what you're going through.

The most you can do at this point is be as supportive as possible, as well as the things that you've already discribed.

I hope everything works out, man.

My grandfather has terminal cancer. It is very depressing watching cancer patients sit around and wither away. I'm amazed that you dealing with it as well as you seem to be. The chemotherapy fried my grandfather's brain. They are saying that the scarring is so bad that they can't check to see if the cancer is fully gone. He now is developing Alzheimer's, which is depressing on a whole different level. Good luck, sorry for your friends illness.

Thanks guys, and I wish the best of luck to your friends and relatives dealing with cancer or other illnesses.

My friend even attended school Friday before his first chemo treatment and was in great spirits. In gym class we had a substitute teacher and we ran the pacer test where you run back and forth like 50 times. He speed walked three of them hunched over, and the sub was like 'why did you only do three?' and he says 'I have cancer.' She gave him the weirdest look and then my buddy said 'Oh my God! You sick sick lady! She doesn't believe him!' then he showed her his tumor and she was just like 'Oh...' and didn't talk for the rest of the day. One of the best laughs I've had in a while.
