While reading the thread on anorexia (general discussions thread, its an interesting read), i came to a shocking realisation. As a multi cultural society, we are ruled by a select few.

These few aren't politicians, terrorists or evil mind-controlling squirrels. No, they are people that make more money than you. Celebrities. No ----, have you seen how much they make? Keanu reaves makes 9 million for a film, even though my ittle brother gave a much better performance than any of his work in his 4th grade play. And he was a freakin' tree!

But wait, theres more. Im not just pissed because they make more than me. Im pissed because they have more followers than the ----ing taliban. Paris hilton wears a pink skirt, half the teenage girls in the world wear the same pink skirt. Angelina Jolie gets a new tattoo, i know 7 people that got exact henna copies, and one that got a real one. Why? Wouldnt it be much quicker to slap a sticker on their forehead that says "as long as you act like a slut, ill copy whatever you do. Go on, try it!".

Why do we do this? At what point did mankind stop being able to function without having to hang off the every word of a few she males and human condoms?

    Discuss.

I agree but that is the way of life nowadays for the kids of today, they will follow their idols and do exactly what they do. Why? Because they want to be just like them and look just like them.

Celebrities are everywhere, newspaper, magazines, billboards, bus stations..basically everywhere we look they are there. They look beautiful and flawless and that is what the kids see, they then get self conscience about themselves and start to change their appearances. What they do not know is that these celebrities are airbrushed after their photo shoots and are made to look better, they have a ton of makeup on also.

It is sad that people want to look like a celebrity but there is nothing we can do about that sadly but we should all be happy with our own appearences and appreciate what we have.

When I was about 8-10 years old, I saw Top Gun for the first time. I thought Tom Cruise was so ----ing cool and I knew I wanted to be a pilot from that point on. Now that I'm older, I see that Tom Cruise is just as messed up as all the other celebrities.

Now, my heroes are the real aces. The real Air Force pilots. Not the people who play them in movies.

Alot of girls over do it, some do it to cover spots etc, i myself dont wear makeup unless i am going out and then it is only eyeshadow, mascara, sometimes eyeliner and vaseline for my lips.

Whereas people wear, foundation, powder, conceler, blusher, eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara, lipstick, lip liner and whatever else they decide to use, sometimes that can look nice if it is only put on in thin layers but sometimes people over do it, especially with foundation and then their face looks orange which looks horrible.

I dont know why they do it, maybe to look better, maybe to hide imperfections, i dont know..there could be many reasons :)

Have you ever seen most of these Hollywood actresses and Singers? Half of them look god awful without their pounds of make-up on. Who wants to look at some nasty broads dancing around on stages and pay for it. We could go to a lousy stripclub for free and watch them dance around on stage.

It’s sad that children from a young age are still ruled by celebrities. I’ll never understand the appeal of celebrity culture.

Very true, thats all the news and tv shows talk about. Its sickening. They need to focus on the average person and quit revolving the world around the spoiled celebrities. Its like some celebrity dies and the whole nation is in depression. But when an average person dies, no one knows besides the people that live locally to them.

Keanu Reeves is an amazing actor.

It's called having a role model.

imo he's not amazing, he's average. or maybe a bit below average. i only like him in Lake house.

Well im a kid, 14, and im a girl. I dont wear make up not a bit, dont wear nail polish , eye shadow, heck i dont know half of the things that kirbir named, i scarcely put on chapstick even but thats just cuz i dont like it. I have friends who bring a whole make up kit to school and i dont really know why. Celebrities do it, i saw one clip of a freaken nasty looking person become completely transformed with makeup and then they took a picture of her and extended her neck or something to make her look better. Kinda weird and i dont find that stuff appealing.

I dont see celebrities as role models. I like some of them cuz they look like pretty cool people to hang out with but i dont want to be like them. Alot but not all , are spoiled and kind of mean and alot of them do drugs and stuff. I dont want my role model to be a druggy or a fake like lots of celebs are.

So not all kids are taken over and ruled by celebrities and not all kids wear make up :D. my mom actually tried to put some make up on me and i ran away which was kind of funny..:) i dont care if celebs put on make up when they are 8 years old i wont start until im ready and i wont overdue it that time because if you over due it its like your hiding your features, your trying to hide who you are and if someone starts to like you they wont be seeing the real you. yep thats my take on this.

Lake house was very good movie, along with speed. Not speed 2, i wanted to drag my face along a brick wall after i saw speed 2...

About the make up, a girl in my class last year (14), sat next to me in maths one time. I was fine with this, as i thought she was pretty hot at the time. It wasn't until half way through the class, when i turned and looked at her. I then realised she was wearing so much makeup, i could only see the powder, and not her skin.

I asked her why the ---- she did this, at which point she replied "Wouldnt you want to look good when you went out, if youwere a girl"

I thought that was really, really sad...

@Bam: Wouldn't you rather have the first man into space, or a man that ran into a burning building to save a baby as a role model.

After united 93 was released, me and 2 friends went to see it. I thought it was an amazing story, with a set of truly amazing people behind it. As we were walking out, i overheard a 19 year old-ish girl say to her friend "That guy was such an amazing actor, hes such a great guy"

Was she just too thick to realise this was about a true story and true people, or is she just really, really shallow?

maybe she didnt know it was about a true story . Or maybe she really thought the guy was a good actor..later she mightve said that the actual guy who did it was good too..

I just think society today is giving young kids the wrong image. I mean anywhere you look you always see " How to look HOT commercials" that give the viewer the idea that if you dont look like the after result of the makeover you are ugly and therefor you have to change to accomodate the likes of others. I think it is redicoulus and i dont understand why people dont realize that trencds change and in 5 years you will look back and say " man i was a dumbass". In 5 years Paris Hilton will lose her Figure and no one will want to buy her sextapes, so people need to realize that the earlier you accept the truth the faster your trancision from a fallower to an individual will be.
I become so disapointed when i see an "ex-disney" star or other kid role models that turn into stupid party whores(excuse my Language).
I swear when im watching movies such as " mean Girls" with my sister and she says "i want to be like her when i grow up", i look at her and see that people really do influence kids in a big way. One day you will want to be that pretty girl from that one movie but in 2 years you will want to be that huge party wh0re just so you look "cool".
