why can't you dual boot it with windows on the same drive?
just make a new partition for it.
yes linux is difficult to install and works with almost no usb modems.
the rewards are great though, it's such an awesome operating system.
and no you're not screwed, just reformat the partition if you do it wrong.
and it depends on the distro (distribution) of linux.
i prefer ubuntu, but knoppix you can run off a usb key so it's handy for a folding rig.

it's not hard at all to install, ubunbtu is actually much easier to install than xp, as is any other modern distro, I recommend Ubuntu or SuSE

I would say its better to get a new HD. My friend tried the same thing as you and his HD messed up. It's better to be safe than sorry. Oh, and it's not easy to install. ubuntu is easy to install, or so I've heard.

If you're installing linux for the first time, I would recommend SuSe Linux. It's the most easiest to install and perfect for beginners. I heard its GUI is easy as well. The whole system is easy is what I've heard.

A lot of linux distributions are no more hard to install than Windows. If you have a hard time installing Ubuntu/OpenSUSE then it's probably because you have a hardware issue (that or you don't know what you're doing).

If you're worried about the install, then just stay away from gentoo or slackware based distributions and you should be okay.

Oh and the fact that linux is harder than windows is just a myth. Linux is only as complicated as you want or need it to be. Remember that. :)
