Ok I would like to hear your opinion about using the Extraction Tool for cutting something out of the background of a picture. Or, in other words, for rendering an image.

People say it is a lame technique, but I really don't understand why. It is a rendering technique just like all the others. Well, truthfully it requires less skill and you can easily tell between extraction and pen tool/polygonal tool, but the results are awesome when you are rendering human hair...

It justs really pisses me off when someone posts an extracted render on the Renders Section and people start saying "omg noob, extraction takes no skills, bla bla bla"... Come on, if the render is good and usable, why do they have to bitch about it? I mean, If you can't say "thanks for sharing the render", don't say anything

I only use the extraction technique when i render because I am still a newb. I need to learn some more techniques and get better at it :)

Oh yeah and I want to see an example of how good the hair looks.

P.s. have you tried liquid mask before?

It depends on how you define 'extraction'.

If you're only talking about the extraction tool as in Filters>Extract, then it comes out pretty bad (if you don't know how to use it properly.) It was probably made for photographers to use on their extremely big pictures where the problems caused by it are less obvious. If the extraction tool was able to 'render' out pictures better, then I would probably use it because I really care how you make the render, but what the end result looks like. (except for ripping....thats just wrong)

Other people think at anything that isn't on the tools palette is extraction. I like using channels to render because you can kinda use the colors in the picture to render it out. Stuff like shadows, beams of light, explosions are really easy to recreate if you know your channels well enough. :)

How do you render? You're renders are really good. Some day I want to be able to make a sig using only one image including rendering it on my own.

Let's see, using extraction. I have nothing against it because it does make things easier. I do not want to waste 40 hours of my life rendering hair when it can be reduced to 1 hr or so.

Ok, its cuts out hair well. I'd like to see someone attempt this render

However, i know that GR doesn't like the technique and i have nothing against that. But saying that extraction can do everything and that its a noob technique is entirely false.

    I hate topics regarding extraction...

i think the end result is the most important thing. so, i don't really think it matters what techniques you use. still, i haven't tried using the extraction tool before.

<span style='font-family:Comic Sans MS'>When you use the Extraction Tool on something easy that has no fine details or anything like that then it makes you look like a "newb" but at the same time, when you are trying to render something that would be almost impossible without it then it doesn't really matter.
I've used it on some of my renders.

Example of the Extraction Tool being used well: <a href=\'http://www.gamerenders.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=224292\' target=\'_blank\'>Ghost Rider</a>

Example of the Extraction Tool being used poorly: <a href=\'http://www.gamerenders.com/forum/index.php?act=module&module=gallery&cmd=si&img=984\' target=\'_blank\'>Lineage II</a>

btw...both of those are my renders</span>

Yes, I'm talking about when it's done on a render that would be almost impossible without it...
Both of your renders look awesome though, I don't think it was used poorly on the Lineage one.

Everything was put into Photoshop for a reason. You will find that that most people on GR know less than 20% of the capabilities of Photoshop. And the ones that you guys consider "---" are only people who know that 20% extremely well.

I went to my uncles work. He's the guy that you see make the designs and stuff, on T-Shirts. What I saw him and his co-workers do, was just beyond amazing. They did stuff that I doubt 3 people on this site could ever think of doing.

In short, the extraction tool is there, use it. If you can't use it for what you want to do, than try something else.
