Well, I needed a new PC badly.. The games I play now days, just tear my PC apart. (ex: 2142, RB6 Vegas). I've been on tight budget lately, and trying to earn money.. But to make SURE I get the best, I came here for a question..

    :My Current PC:

    AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Gigabyte K8N SLi Motherboard (Supports X2, 64, and FX) (939)
    1GB Corsair RAM
    350W Power Supply
    eVGA 7600GS 256mb
    180GB HardDrive

My motherboard, and HardDrive is fine. Just getting a new CPU and GFX card and PSU to support the GFX card.. Take a look..

    ..:: Specs of what I want ::..

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ / 2MB Cache / 2000MHz FSB / Socket 939
    EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS / 640MB GDDR3

~ I don't want to go intel Core 2 Duo, ONLY because of my budget. I don't want to have to spend money on a new motherboard, CPU, and GFX and Power supply.. Thats just to much $$$

    ~~ So i choose the AMD X2 4800 Because..

-I can use my existing motherboard
    --Cheaper (A LOT CHEAPER)
    ---Dual Core
----Good Reviews my friends and sites..

~~ SO ~~ Is this a good idea or not? I want Dx10 and I want the 8800GTS. I hear that the 8600 Ultra is coming, But I can't wait that long.. My money would go to another place..

    Thanks!!

I dont see why not, Im an Intel user but hate the duo's and will gladly go AMD instead of DUO mainly cuz DUOs are slow even though its "double"

Kool, thanks.. I'm working on getting some more funds for the GFX card.. And more for the new PSU I will need to handle the massive 8800GTS

get an opteron 165(those bitches overclock well), then wait for the mainstreme DX10 cards.

until then, softmod your 7600GS to a 7600GT or something close to.

Also, the core 2 duos are far from slow, they are almsot twice as fast as the dual core Pentiums.

if i where you i would save up and get a new mobo and 6600 c2d.. cause the 4800 probably is going to bottleneck the 8800gts

I have a Core 2 Duo and I love it.

I see what you mean by budget though.

there is nothing that a C2d can do that an Athlon x2 or opteron can't

HE DOESN'T WANT TO BUY A NEW MOTHERBOARD, NEW RAM AND A NEW CPU.

    Fanoys, please S-T-F-U

take that, overclock to 2.6-3.0GHz DONE.

at 3.0, it would be the equivilent of an x2 6000+

no idea why you didn't get a DFI ultra-D though... cheaper ebtter, and a small line of ink on the chipset makes it into an SLi-d

and again 8800GTS is at this moment poor bang/$ at the very least wait until the 360mb version is out for 100$ less.

listen to xelink he knows his sh*t.

if you can afford it maybe pick up another GB of ram thats the only thing i would add.

and you may want to wait until the 8600's are released cause that should hopefully drop the 8800's in price sumwhat.

You honestly haven't a clue of what you're talking about, do you?

This is kind of a paradox... you want a budget buy, but your paying $400 for a video card.

Thank you!! Your like the #1 Tech Guy here!! Thanks a bunch :)
But... My Gigabyte Mobo.. does not support that CPU.. Only 64, X2, and FX.

I CAN... Get a 7900GS.. then when the 8600 Ultra comes out (which is what I really want.. cuz that thing is faster than a 7950GX2) in Mid-Feb or early march. (right?) then when the 8600 comes.. i can use the Step-Up program from eVGA.

    When does the 8600's come?

    thnx

    my mobo:

trust me, it supports that CPU...

my Ultra-D didn't support that CPU, but it sure the hell worked on it.

the Opterons are essentially higher binned Athlons which are made for high levels of reliability in a server enviroment. That essentiality translates into "overclock me"

also, s939 Athlon x2s are no longer produced... so you have little choice if you want to hang onto 939 and still go dual core.

here is every soket 939 compatable CPu there is
