Well currently i am running a new intel 3.0 dual processer with 1.5 gb ram 1 ( 1gb stick ) 1 ( 512 mb ) of ram. i got 250 gb hd for c and a 250 for d ( added later ). im thinking about getting a new pc because i have herd amd athelon ( spelling ) is good. What would u suggest...
When you say a dual 3.0GHz intel, you're referring to the Core based Xeon right? the pentium Ds suck balls. They only do about half as much work per GHz as the new core 2 duos. Ranking of CPUs byu overall performance Core 2 AMD Athlon X2 Core 1 Duo(Overclocks better than the athlons though) Pentium D Athlon 64(games better than pentium Ds but only single core) Core Solo(Overclocks better than the athlon 64s) Pentium M Celeron M Sempron/Sempron 64 Pentium 4 Athlon XP Celeron D PIII(taulatin) Celeron FYI a 3.0GHz Pentium D is probably acceptable, just overclock the bitch to say 4.0-4.5
as a rule fo thumb, it's rather hard to fry equipment unless you change the voltage settings(or leave it on auto). as for the pentium Ds... 300 FSB isn't all that hard on modern boards, and the chip itself is very thermally resistant, just tss on a good HSF liek a tuniq tower or a scythe infinity and watch the frequency fly and the temps plummet. don't expect 4.5 on stock volts though 4.0 is more reasonable in nature however. based on that chart, my e6400 at 3.2GHz is around 45-55% faster than my Old AMD opteron 1.5 @2.6GHz in most scenarios and arround twice as fast as your 3.0GHz Pentium D(I assume you have a pentium D, if you had one fo the new server Xeons I'd envy you) ============= on another note, trash the 512mb stick of RAM if it's knocking your system out of dual channel operation and swap it for a 1GB stick with the same ICs/SPDs. Dual channel RAM gives a huge memory bandwidth boost and netburst loves that. Core Does too but not as much.
