Well, I recently got my new computer and all was well until the mobo died, so I am in the process of RMAing it, and am using my old computer again.

Before I got my new computer, the sound was 100% perfect. I got my new one, unplugged monitor, speakers, etc. and switched them over, and about 1 week later (when the mobo bios chip ----ed up) I started to try to run iTunes, and if I run it within about the first 5 minutes of the computer starting up, the audio works fine for the duration of the program, but as soon as I shut the program down (any program that uses audio like games, WMP, iTunes, winamp, etc.) the sound stops working 100%. The computer no longer recognizes an audio device exists (after closing a program) and the only time audio will work is when I shut down the system (for the signing off Windows XP sound) and ofc I can run something when the computer first boots, but I am fairly tired of restarting my computer every time I wanna go to iTunes from WMP or play a game after listening to some music, etc. especially since my computer takes 3-4 minutes to even get back to the login screen on a restart.

Any clue why my computer may be functioning like this?

One possibility is that the drivers have gone bad. Is it onboard audio on the mobo or a after market sound card? You might want to reinstall the drivers.

Checked drivers, those are a non-issue, and the sound is on-board. Sorry it has taken a while to resond, my week has been hectic.

Is sounds to be more of a Software issue rather than a Hardware issue. You said the sound will work fine until you close a program but after that nothing works until the next reboot right? This could be a Windows problem. What's the spec of your computer? And when was the last time you reformated your computer? Maybe a Windows repair would work a possible Windows file could be corrupted. I had a similar issue before, but mine was a hardware problem, and I bought a PCI sound card to fix the problem. You can also try that as a test. If you have an extra sound card somewhere and install it and run a test. It's also possible the onboard sound is going bad also. That's what I hate about PC repair, you have to do it by trial and error. Hope that works and waiting to hear back from you.

This is my old computer RA, my new computer is currently down because im RMAing the mobo.

As for the specs, Its not a hardware problem, and once I find a way to put my files somewhere, I can reformat it, its been awhile.

You could do an inplace upgrade instead of reformatting, basically same thing sept you keep files and data.

I had a problem with my Comp losing sound as well, but it lost all together. Wouldn't work in any programs, couldn't recognize audio device at all. So I went to HP support, since that what kinda comp I got, then just navigated through help stuff and downloaded the original drivers that came with my comp, and then all was well. Maybe you could try this? And if does not not work try the inplace upgrade or reformat I guess.

thats a very strange problem
