as fame player it's not really worth it, the xbox 360 is a lot better bang/$ and has better online play.

as a multi media center, maybe.

i have a ps3 and its great. for xbox you need to pay a monthly fee for online play but for ps3 you just need a connection.

??? used games? i think you mean like burned games or something but im not sure.. i dont think blu-ray can be copied but you may be able to store full games in the harddrive because you can keep demos on there

It seems very unlikely to me that xelink actually did some decent online play, if he did it at all.

    You're comparing the xbox360 to the Ps2.

The Ps3 has all that aswel as a unified friendslist that contrary to a lot of biased articles on the internet has quite the same functionality as the xbox live one.

I'm don't know what exactly you mean with multi media centre but if you mean the option to play your own music and video or download. Yes it has that too.

However, it certainly isn't worth the hype, and I say that as probably the biggest Sony fanboy on these forums. As far as I'm concerned it beats or equals the xbox360 in every way I can think of (unless maybe the size, it's quite big compared to the sleek Ps2)
But that doesn't change the fact all the next gen consoles are very overhyped.

If you have $600 to blow, sure it's worth it price/quality wise. You get what you pay for.

What I mean by used games is there was a rumor last year that the PS3 would not play used, rented, borrowed etc. games.

I just want to make sure it really CAN play them.

actually you get more than you pay for, the console costs sony around $800 to make. Also, consoles have a rediculously long life span compared to other consumer electronics.

As an actual gaming console though, for playing games the PS3 isn't entiirely worth ti at the moment. The Xbox 360 has more games and at the moment games are simply looking better on it. The two consoles are about as powerful and as I said the online gameplay is better, you get what you pay for. If the PS3 had a $400 version without the blu-ray player I'd probably be recomending it over the xbox in every way. But they're making you pay for a player which might be worthless in the near future(if blu-ray is not adopted) and is slow in the present(DVDs load games faster than blu-ray or HDDVD)

quality wise it's a decent machine, but at this moment, I'm a little finicky about the reliability of Cell. Cell is having really low yields and that's typically indicative of a series which will have a short physical life span.

and to be honest, I do not own an xbox or a PS3, I own a PS2 and a GC, but that's it.a

Consoles are the way to go if you don't want to hassle with the high cost and hassle of building a PC. More performance can be squeezed out of a consolethan can out of a PC with similar parts simply because the games can be stream lined for the console. If you instlled windows on an xbox and tried to run the PC version of halo on it, performance would be crap becausethe PC version just isn't as well optimized.
    ============================

the real question to ask though is this - are the games on the PS3 worth it? A console is worthless without games. That's why the playstation 1 suceeded and the nintendo 64 failed even though the N64 was mroe powerful and better bang/$

Like xelink said, the PS3 and the 360 are almost typically the same as far as hardware is concerned, the only thing is the PS3 has the blu ray drive. Basically most of the PS3's huge pricetag is coming from that.

The problem with blu ray is this.
When game makers have been designing games for dvd - hd dvd, they will have to come up with new ways to make games for the blu ray dvd's.

I would not get a PS3 at the moment, just because there are few major titles out.

The only good games you are going to get for it are Resistance fall of man and that one dirt derby game...

But the PS3 has a lot of new features and free online...
Do what you want, but if your looking for good games with awesome playing, i would go with the 360, there are more major titles for it :).

Yes the PS3 is worth it. Besides the blu-ray, it is a powerfull machine and is worth the money. Btw people saying the xbox 360 has better games, sorry but most of the games for this generation are multiplatform so sorry but I dont see how a game for the xbox 360 can be better than the one on the ps3. Yes there are some exlusive titles for the xbox 360 and the PS3. But yea the PS3 is worth the money, great system.

And if that made me seem like a Sony fanboy, I'm not I like the xbox 360 and ps3.

actually it's not that much harder to make game son blu ray discs.

it's just more expensive since the discs cost more

and blu-ray discs load games slower than DVDs. SO you need to compress the data to make up for slwo reads. Which leaves you with 24GB free out of a 25GB disc. As it is, DVDs aren't even fully utilized for games unless a lot of cinematic scenes arew included.

EDIT: a;sp, name one good PS3 game, right here and now.

I thought you had to use different encryption and etc for blu ray.

burning data on the disc is relatively cheap after the equipment to do it is paid for. It can be done in large volume and the equipment can be recycled for other titles.

Right now, there aren't enough PS3s out for the manufacturing limits of those making games to be stretched, not even close.

And honestly, name any major titles that will be only released for the PS3...

NONE, microsoft has the ability to get major titles because they can persuade other companies that their machine is better and they will support the game by offering their support during the making.

In the end, wait a few months, see if anything good is out.

    If not, get a 360.

actually final fantasy, but that's about it.

and square-enix seems to be getting more nintendo friendly lately too.

I think NoA is begginning to be less restrictive in its gasmes, they did major censoring for their other consoles.
