Ok so my friends and I have taken some cool and funny vids and are in the process of compiling them together and producing them into a DVD to give out to our other friends. And I was wondering what program do I use to do special effects like the ones i see in movies  I've got some cool ideas and have no idea how to do them. I also would like to known any program which i could do 3d animation in like in 'Final Fantasty Advent Children' and those kid movies, this has been a major interest of mine every sine I got to know graphics abit better.

we are currently using Pinnacle or whatever it is to edit the clips but we can only do text and simple transitions. Any program suggestions would be a major help =D

For video editing the software which I know of that are usefull and good are Adobe Premiere, and Discreet Combustion.

As for the computer animation, thats the field I'm trying to get into. I'd suggest not getting into it unless your really interested in it and want to do that for a career. The softwares for 3D animation which game developers and movie studios use are Lightwave, Maya, Cinema 4D, and 3D Studio Max. Out of all of them 3D Studio Max is the best one but it's really hard to learn, I find Cinema 4D to be easier. If you want to start out I'd suggest try Cinema 4D and then move on to 3D Studio Max.

Well I dont know much about special effects, but for beginners you can do those little video effects in adobe premiere, if your talking about big budget movie special effects then theres softwares like Flint, Smoke, Inferno etc. their all from Discreet or Autodesk w/e has bought Discreet. But you can use those 3D modelling softwares I mentioned to make effects.
