FTP Whiz</span> Introduction Welcome! Chances are you're reading this because you want to learn FTP, which can be very difficult. I am going to teach you FTP in many little steps, so you're guaranteed great results! Getting Started I know you're all think, "Enough talk, let's get started!" so here we go! By the end of this section, you should know how to connect to the FTP Client. Recommended Program FTP Whiz recommends FileZilla due to it's outstanding performance, though most FTP clients will work. Installing Once you have downloaded FileZilla, follow the installer, as it is very straight forward. You should have no troubles at all. Once installed, open the program. Connecting Connecting is fairly easy. Most FTP clients will ask for your the three following things: Address | This address is where your username and password will connect. Usually it is ftp.yourdomain.com, though can vary. If in any doubt, contact your host. Username | Your username is self explanatory. You can usually set it up in your cPanel. Password | Once again, self explanatory. You can usually set it up in your cPanel. Port | 99.9% of the time it will be 21. Basic Functions FTP has many functions, though, some functions are more difficult than others. We will learn the easier functions before the more difficult functions. Uploading Uploading is probably one of the most important functions, and is fairly easy. Most FTP Clients (like FileZilla) support drag and drop. Other FTP Clients require you to individually right click on each file and click upload. Drag And Drop Drag and Drop is an easy way to upload files - all you do is click and hold the file/directory, and let go in the remote site column. The FTP Client will then upload and the files/directories (that you dragged) by itself, which is a great time saver! Directories Directories are like a folder, but on the internet. And example of a directory is <a href=\'http://www.domain.com/images/\' target=\'_blank\'>http://www.domain.com/images/</a>. The images part is a directory, meaning that the images directory can hold files within it (eg. <a href=\'http://www.domain.com/images/test.jpg)\' target=\'_blank\'>http://www.domain.com/images/test.jpg)</a>. Editing So you've made the perfect website, but you find this one small error. Editing is the solution! Editing Files FTP Clients do not allow you to edit files in the program, though it does let you download files. Once you've downloaded the file and edited it, re-upload it to your website. Some hosts even have an online editor. Editing File Names Editing files names is very easy. All you have to is right click on the file and click Rename. Downloading Downloading is a way to make backups of your site, along with editing files. All you have to do is drag and drop the file into the local site column (your C: drive). Deleting Deleting files can be very useful if they are no longer needed. To delete files, simply click the file and press delete on your keyboard. Please note after the file is deleted, the only way to restore it is reuploading it if you've made a backup. Advanced Functions While FTP has many easy functions, it also has advanced and more difficult ones. Usually programs like Invision Power Board requires you to know most of these skills. CHMOD CHMOD is a fancy word for file permission. File permissions are a great way to hide certain files, along with letting different people have different permissions. To CHMOD a file, right click a file and click file attributes. The standard website's file permission is 755. File Upload Modes Different programs require different file upload types. For example, a simple HTML website wouldn't matter what type of upload mode you upload it in, while WordPress PHP files would require you to only use ASCII. Graphics must also be uploaded in Binary. Binary Binary is an upload mode that online file uploaders/editors (eg. AwardSpace, RipWay, etc.) use. Though, they usually also support FTP, which gives you more freedom over which way the file is uploaded. <span style=\'color:blue\'>ASCII ASCII is used for most PHP files, along with other complex file types. The only way to upload in ACSII mode is via FTP. Graphics cannot be uploaded via ACSII.
