I'm pretty much a rookie when it comes to buying parts for my PC since I just started building my own. I bought this heatsink http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16835185125 and found out thet it doesn't fit at all on my motherboard even if it was compatible with my current processor (socket 939) and the retention doesn't fit either. my stock heatsink setup has 4 screws in each corner, can anyone help on this as I don't want to make another mistake again. I'm buying a new one since I returned the one that didn't fit
It seems from the description from that heatsink that it would have worked. It said that it was compatible with a socket 939. The heatsink would have come with adapters to fit your current mobo. Or you can get these ones: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16835186126 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16835118004 Basically anything that has socket 939 compatibility would work. Make sure you get anything with copper in it, which discepate heat better.
not in my case, my motherboard has no screw holes to fit the retention, it's only at the 4 corners on where my processor is... I'll try to get a pic of my motherboard and the retention so you could picture it more
here are some pics of how my motherboard setup for the heatsink the screw holes in red http://www.click2host.us/002/Image002copy118095.jpg stock heatsink http://www.click2host.us/002/Image004921840.jpg http://www.click2host.us/005/Image005347500.jpg
my PC itself is a premade from gateway, but here is the motherboard http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/FIC/.../105553mv.shtml
If the mobo is a stock Gateway mobo, then I would think that any aftermarket Cpu Cooler won't work. Like the Dell systems I fix and repair, aftermarket parts are not compatible. I have to contact Dell or a reseller to get the exact same parts to replace. You still might get luck with Gateway. I would contact their Tech Support Department and ask them if an aftermarket CPU cooler would work. Goodluck.
nope, well my heatsink is designed for AMD 3700+ and I just upgraded it to x2 4400+, it's running at 60c right now... but now that yo mentioned it, my 3700+ also runs at 60c when I last checked it
Why dont you use the HSF that came with your 4200+? BTW, AMD CPU's actually run hotter than most intels - so you should be fine around the 50* mark. You can improve those temps by adding better thermal paste!
