It depends on your budget, and how you are going to use the pc

    DDR2, and E6600 infact.
    SATA-II hard drive.
    That's a base, but you don't need the E6600.

you do realise that rig will cost more than a house

8800 series and the new nVidia chipset are horrobly overpriced at the moment.

Do build one and go down the core 2 route, whether that's duo or quad (it's not true quad core though)

    C2D IS A MUST!

Then you can wait for a nice DX10 card when the prices drop.

1.86GHz c2d> 3.4GHz Pentium D in over 95% of all real world applications - ESPECIALLY GAMING AND GRAPHICS

I'm running my c2d at 3.2GHz easy FYI,

dude, the e6300 (i.e the cheapest one) kills the athlon FX60 when overclocked

go over to tomshardware if you want proof.

and if you have the right motherboard, e6300 can be overclocked to 3.0ghz easily, in my case i got it to 3.25, making it imo the most bangs-per-buck processor. Because i saved so much going down this route, i also picked up the 7950 GX2.

    C2D just makes sense..

seventeen or bust is a good example..

    http://www.seventeenorbust.com/

remember just because on average it is around twice as powerful per GHz, doesn't mean it always is, and it only takes one point, 1%, one other unit for a CPU to win. C2d can beat a CPU 1000 to 1 95% of the time, but if it looses 1001 to 1000 5% of the time it still looses 5% of the time.

screw 3 ghz. get core 2 duo. even though they have lower clock speeds they are still faster processors.
