your current heatsink could be your cooler.

lol, yeah, forgot about that, I can't decide still on what to get, the opteron 170 or x2 4400+ since they have the same price, which has the higher performance?

x2 4400+ woudl have higher performance.

    x2 4400+ is an AMD K8 chip at 2.2GHz with 2*1MB l2 cache
    opteron 170 is an AMD k8 chip at 2.0GHz with 2*1MB l2 cache/\.

the opteron has a few other small thigns the x2 4400+ doesn't but they don't really matter for people like us. the opteron also overclocks better... but this also isn't applicabel to you.

the best choice is the x2 4400+(it's litterally double your current CPU) BUT
your athlon 64 produces something like 40% less heat. I don't know how well its heatsink would do. The opteron 170 does come with an OK heatsink(I actually kind of liked it, it's somewhat cheap but very effective and respectable quality, definitely better than intels stock cooler)
