It all depends on what you will be using it for.
If its just as a means to transfer data, like if u work at home on stuff and need to take it to the office etc. then small is fine.
If you are a .torrent junkie like me bigger is better. I have a 250gig atm but it is almost full. I've had to start using my internal 400gig for storage! I am looking into getting a 500gig ext atm...

I have just downloaded torrent and i have like 80gb of space left on my normal hard drive so i'm thinking about getting like a 200gb ext hard-drive. How much would one of those cost?

I'm also thinking of getting and external hard drives...how do they work? I mean, do you have to install anything?

I'm getting a 200GB External Hard-drive for Christmas and I am sure it will be more than enough.

I am one of those crazy people i buy internal since it costs half as much and is faster...

I'm also crazy because i dont' try to future proof myself. see the way i see it sure i might eventually use all the space on my 250gb drive i it woudl have been better to go 320...

but by then, I can get a 2TB drive for like 5$... drive space gets exponentially cheaper each year. so buy less than you need(say a 160, 250 or 320) and buy another later for less...
