Alright one of my christmas presents is an upgrade from my current 512MB RAM to a 2GB RAM. One of my friends says that this upgrade will not affect my pc's performance by much, and that I will hardly notice the change since my processor is Celeron 2.6 GHz. I don't know anything about computers, I just wanted to know if he's right, or will the RAM upgrade be a good boost in performance?
depends on what you do. general use will be effectively the same under both scenarios. gaming and heavy multitasking will improve a fair deal though. and aspick, RAM bottlenecking is minimal, the CPU is almost always the bottleneck. My 3.1GHz core2 bottle necks my system more than My RAM(DDR2-775 4-3-3-8 timings) if he got low performance RAM, real world diference would be only moderate. Now this is a cache crippled celeron so yes RAM performance has a larger impact but not to the extent peopel think. If you double the speed of you're RAM while mantaining latency, you might get a 5% increase in overall performance.
ok basically, if you use A LOT of programs at once like: iTunes a video editor Cs2 image ready internet lets say solitare Final cut --- You know things like that. So at your point now it should be a little bit laggy (your comp, liek your brushing during Cs2 will have like a 2sec delay, your FCP will have a ---- play back). But if you upgrade to a 2gb RAM then every thing will be at top shape. I am personally wanting to upgrade, but i am getting a mac soon
macs use the same damn ram as any other regular system DDR2... technically all macs are now PCs since they use the same components. my thougt on macs is as follows, great if you don't know how to build a PC or use one and if you plan to stay in your ignorant state. More idiots and lame brains should use them, keep them the hell away from PCs.
I have 512 mb now and I run alot of programs at once. If I upgrade to 1 GB would it be faster when I run alot? (which I usually do and it lags)
Basically, I want to be able to run MSN Messenger, Photoshop, Firefox, and WMP with all of them running smoothly.
in the latter scenario it won't matter really performance diference between the high end stuff and the low end stuff is minimal. as for a bottle neck... take a bear bottle and drain it through it's neck... notice how it drains somewhat slowly, not smack off the bottle's neck and it will drain faster when held upside down. Essentially a bottle neck is what holds everything else back.
bottleneck is the slowest part in the system haven't you ever heard "your only as good as your weakest player"
lucky me i got a 2gb ram , just need to find those viruses or spywares i might have to get my pc back in great performance
i swear most peopel are paranoid about ---- like that. pop in windows disc reinstalll problem fixed cost $0.00 time spent: 30mins ehh... and lucky has nothing to do with it, a lot of people have been leaning towards getting 2GB for almost a year now. It's more or less standard for a midrange system now. What's luck is getting a system which has high performance RAM, most don't. I got 2GB high performance RAM for $160 a few months ago, I'm so lucky... That kit costs like $260 now due to RAM price increases...
Their are several ways to do it. Easiest is just to use one from a friend, so you'll even be able to update.
