depends on how often you get a new system if you get a new one once a year, a regular dual core will be sufficient. I have an e6400 overclocked to 2.93-3.1GHz(board won't let me go higher for now)

most things peopel actually use like games, windows, most programs, dfon't even take advantage of dual core chips, adding two more doesn't do anything, and the added heat lowers overclocking potential.

if you don't really OC much though, by all means go quad, heck you can make it into two x6800s simply by adjusthing the multi up 1.

Well, having a quad core would help me multi-task better, i was thinking of getting the non quad core version of it, for the extra clock speed since i play games quite a bit, but on the other hand having the quad core would make it easier to do photshop / C4D and movie editing stuff, or run 2 clients on EVE and still be able to run browsers / compilers / aim / msn / etc.

I doubt ill be getting a new system that often.

@The programs: If i used linux ( which cant play games *easily* without whine and some other stuff ), I think it takes advantage of having 4 cores. And programs are prob going to start to come out that take advantage of duel / quad cores, since they are growing and becoming more widely used.

Edit: Also, linux thing was just a comment. I wouldnt have a need for linux on here because it cant run the stuff i use.

Anyone know if vista will take advantage of the duel / quad core?

Indeed, the QX6700s are a waste of money
the E6400 is hella fast, i still havent tried to OC it coz i'm running a 2mb PCI videocard due to lack of money :( :(
Go for the E6300-E6400... cheaper and yet hella fast

edit: I do plan on OCing this a bit aswell.

Only really needed for businesses that are running maybe 10 cpu-raping apps at once.
For gaming, no current games can make use of the 4 cores until Alan Wake, Crysis and the next gen of DX10 games.
IMO, spending that much just isn't worth it.
Get a 6400, and overclock it.

Wow i was just doing research for all of this for myself.

The quad core is definetly a step up in all the tests. and its even better than AMD 4x4. It outperforms it and uses half the power so overclocking this would be insane.

For the board you want to go with this one from EVGA. The reviews are great. And OC is insanely easy. Also it is made for QuadCore.

I actually feel ashamed to say this because i am all for new egg but tiger direct has an oem quadcore thats about $600 cheaper. So go for tigerdirect and get it. In case you don't know OEM just means it comes with no manuals and stuff but you can get those online. :D

    Hope this helps.
