The Iraqi death toll hit a record high in October, with more than 3,700 people losing their lives in the ongoing violence, according to a UN report.

The majority of the 3,709 people who died were killed in sectarian attacks - nearly 200 more than in the previous record month of July.

The brunt of the violence was borne in Baghdad, while the report also noted that women were increasingly victims.

The UN bases its figures on data collected by the Iraqi Health Ministry.

    Unknown bodies

"The civilian population of Iraq continues to be victims of terrorist acts, roadside bombs, drive-by shootings, cross fire between rival gangs, or between police and insurgents, kidnappings, military operations, crime and police abuse," the report said.

It also made reference to the growing numbers of unidentified bodies which turn up in various areas around the capital.

During September and October, some 3,253 such corpses were found, many thought to be the victims of death squads operating with the collusion of the police.

And it noted the deteriorating plight of women, whom it said were increasingly targets of religious extremists and so-called honour killings.

"Kidnappings associated with rape and sex slavery have also occurred."

    Getting facts

Last month, one US survey estimated that some 655,000 Iraqis might still be alive but for the US-led invasion of 2003.

The figures were vigorously disputed by supporters of the war in Iraq, including US President George W Bush, but there is backing for the methodology used among some statisticians.

The collation of data is an immense challenge in a country where anti-US insurgents and sectarian death squads pose a grave danger to researchers.

I dont know about you guys but to me this proves that we dont need to be there anymore.

No offense to any american , but its not like you are doing anyone a favour by staying there , lets not lie to our selves , if it wasn't for the war none of this would of happened.

You shouldn't stay there anymore? yea you're right , i guess you've done your part , ----ed up the country , killed half the population , stole it's oil , now there on their own , they can keep dieing , but hey , it's not like YOU started it , wait , actually you did.

The country was better when saddam was still there , in spite of his criminal actions , thanks to him , the whole damn country was educated , it was full of doctors/scientists/etc... , he made sure every kid stays in school.

But hey , its BETTER now! you saved them!

Oh for God's sake, I can't beleive people like you still exist.

This situation should never have unfolded, but unfortunatly for the Iraqi's, it has, and we (the U.S. and it's allies) can't leave now, because that would only end in immediate [iraqi] civil war and [iraqi] economical collapse. So, we have no choice but to stay there until it is safe for us and them to leave.

    lol

Saddam didnt bomb the WTC now did he - Osama did and hes somewhere in afghanistan and ive heard hes dead as well due to a disease

Saddam was a leader which the US feared - Now hes going to probably get hanged or something similar, which i think is wrong - Iraq was populous before US started war and now look at it - Waste of barren land

However facts prove that america is running out of oil and because the middle east is full of oil hence war in middle eastern countries due to US being there trying to 'steal' it

Also I do admit they are like keeping a safeguard over the country so hell doesnt break lose but the families who are waiting for their loved ones what are they thinking if there close ones are there forever.. man its too much

US should stop acting like the 'King' and Bush should go - Bush started this crap and its an opinion of mine and many people in US as well

The toll is going to continue to rise, I think the war on Iraq was a big mistake and America should really have minded there own buisness and not invade Iraq. They have just really made it worse, not the people but the goverment. It is really not good enough and I am sure a lot of people have some questions to ask them. The goverment do not seem to always use there power in the right way.

Peace to all those that have died in Iraq. I hope they enjoyed there life as it lasted.

    several facts

if it were a war for oil oil prices in the US woudl have gone down not up dumbass, supply and demand and right now supply is a lto lower than before the war.

the total says we've lost 3600 soldiers.
how many soldiers are there? A ----LOAD. The rate of death from the flu is about the same as the deathrate in iraq, big ----ing wow.

and it might have been responcible or the deaths of 600,000 people.
Where the hell is that number generated? Did someone go to a parallel universe and count or something?

Better yet, why does this neglect to mention the number of iraqis saddam was killing each year on average, isn't that relevant? If saddam killed on average 150,000 people then we'de be right back where we started...
ever hear of the Kurdish genocide?
