Okay, I'm looking to set up a forum for "Coldread" an underground band.... And I was wondering what i'd need for IPB Packages... - Domain: $15/Year - IPB: $185 Is there anything else that I'd need to tell them about?
Your overpaying for the domain man it usually costs 8 dollars a year but you might want to buy a skin also that usually costs 30 bux or talk to me I can make you one for 25 coded
Ye you are paying double the amount unless you going for something besides .com Anyways .. THe perpetual license price is pricey but if you got cash to burn then ye I think thats fine All you need is hosting for the IPB and thats about it DarkStar
Forum Software - IPB (comes with more up front, less customization, quicker setup, generally better looks, far less mods): $185.00 if for 5 or more years, otherwise $70+30 for each additional year Forum Software - vB (alot of customization, comes with the basics, add what you need, and don't add the rest, harder setup, far more capabilities, better for larger communities due to lack of excess junk): $160.00 if 2 or more years, $85.00 if not. Note that IPB continues to work after your license expires, you just do not get upgrades or customer support. vB requires that you pay the $185.00 up front to continue to run the board as long as you like, with updates for 1 year, after 1 year it is an optional fee of $30/yr to continue to get updates for 1 more year. Template - Generally between $25 - 45 for pre-made usage right templates, upwards of $300-400 for a true ----- custom skin, about $60 for a freelance, learning custom skin, uncoded. Modifications - Free for both, one is an open site (invisionize.com, as well as MANY others), vBulletin is all mainly on 1 site (vBulletin.org). Domain: Usually sites offer like $3-4 for the first year and $8 for each additional year if you sign a 3-4 year contract with them. Hosting: I personally recommend http://www.surpasshosting.com/ for shared hosting and resellers, their servers I haven't heard about or have personal experience, but their customer service, and their specifications are GREAT. They are extremely reliable, fast, etc. anything you could expect from a high end hosting site with a nice price, and they upgrade your account free of charge (minus the difference in payments/the upgraded account). Generally thats the basics to open a site. Some people like hosting a chat room like on the IRC from their site using a Java Applet like the one at the header of this forum, some don't. Its free of charge and just requires template editing.
