I'm holding out with a 9800 --- until I can either be assed ordering a X1950XTX or until ATi release their new R600 core.
i'd advise you to wait until DX10 games are actually released in volume. At this moment a 7800 is sufficient enough and FYI from what I'm hearing ATI's R600 core is supposed to be a fair amount more powerful than the g80 core so dont' limit yourself(based on real world benchmark results though) and ATI kinda has a few extras over nVidia on DX10 - they worked with M$ to make the xbox360's xenos core and are likely to have advanced access to what should be needed for proper dx10 support. ===================== EDIT - SOME conclusion results http://forums.guru3d.com/showpost.php?p=2002576&postcount=1 8800GTS is on par with the 7950GX2. That would put the 8800GTX about 10-30% above the 7950GX2(which is what was expeted)
Yeh... right ever hear of GeForce fx? microsoft is about half way to blame for GeForce FX sucking such nasty balls comapred to radeon 9000 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geforce_fx here is a brief history - nVidia made the xbox gfx chip for M$. Soon after nVidia was abel to drastically cut costs and M$ wanted to draw up another contract to reflect the cheaper production costs. Nvidia refused to lwoer the price of the chip and M$ got pissed, they have not been as happy with nVidia ever since. On another note - nVidia makes decent linux drivers...
