Buy the PS3, take the rest of the cash, go down to the local electronics store, Fry's if you have one, buy a case, motherboard, CPU, Video card, Ram, Hard Drive, and a power supply. You can put together a really nice machine for less than $1000. Read the manual that comes with the motherboard to see where everything plugs in, it isnt hard. Then you have both and money to burn on whatever else you want.

Buy a PC and wait until they sort out the problems there will be with the PS3's that come straight off the assembly line.

Besides, anyone who buys a new console in the first six months of it's release are nothing more than free beta testers for Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo/etc...

    Hmm?
Dude.. On eBuyer UK I built a pretty damn good PC for £600-700.. Thats what? $1200? + It's alot cheaper in US..

    And it had:

Dual Core Proccessor with 4MB Cache
    1GB of ram
7900GTO GFX Card (some 7900 variation atleast)
    250GB HD
    DVD R/W Blah Blah Drive
    Mobo
    etc
    etc

No monitor or periperhals, but a pretty darn good PC. Also could probally upgrade to 2gb for not muchless. Imo in the states you could build a top notch PC for $1300 Easy.

If you need a computer for college, get a computer, it's that simple. Also, get a MacBook if you do. Even better: get a MacBook --- since you have received enough money for one. They're top-notch laptops ;)

Make a custom PC, it's cheaper and you'll have better components. Also, you should probably hold on to your money instead of running out to buy a PS3 right away, wait until the Holiday season when bundles come out :D

If you can only get one I would get a computer.

    1. PS3 will take less time to save up for, especially in college.

    2. Many games for PS3 and XBOX 360 will also be coming out for PC, you'll be able to play most of the games

    3. You can also pick up a $10 controller for your computer so you're not using the keyboard.

    Hope I helped. =)

Ok I love all of you guys :)
First of all I asked my Engineering teacher and he gave me a good recomendation.
Told me to hold on to my money for PS3 as I can get it in the holidays and stuff for cheaper.
He also told me to email one of his students from last year who went into the same profession as I will be going in and told me that he got a really cheap Mac. notebook with a Geforce 7900GT and a killer performance :)

So I am going to email that guy right now
and find out what he thinks about this :)

    Thanks guys
will get back to all of you soon :)

    Zain ;)

dude why waste money on a PS3...360's are better, cheaper, and more efficient...

now for the matter at hand...id go with the comp.
just find u a bad ass computer with a dickload of ram and you're set

the comp that i recently got was a 17 in Toshiba Notebook with 2000 mb of ram. i spent around 1500 for it.

Use it for the PC. You can always get a PS3 later. Your education is more important than material possessions.

For college work, you don't need a fantastic computer, since you can delete everything once the class is over..So why waste $1200-$1500 on one..
