let em link you to this first

and be forewarned - it's a dell(or atleast produced by a division of Dell)

    http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=7113

    same system too...

FYI if you build + overclock you could easily get a system with around 30% mroe CPU performance and tripple the graphics performance for around 1500$

(i note you dont' have the money up front though)

my advice is this - and ti will come as a shocker(since this is me after all)

check if dell's inspiraon lien has PCI-e x16 ports if they do get one with an e6400 and get 2GB ram for it, add in a 7900GS. shouldn't come out to more than 1200 and woudl offer a much better gaming experience.(I highly suggest a fresh install of windows ASAP though and make sure you get the OS disc and the drivers disc)

alienware is overpriced, don't even bother with them

if you're getting your new build form velocity micro, then they're probably somewhat better priced, btu I'm nto entirely sure.

if you want better bang/$ try
http://ibuypower.com pick and choose(get a better PSU though)

by the way, CPU stands for Central Processing Unit. What you're looking to get is an entire computer. The CPU is just one part in the computer. When you want a car, you don't go around saying "I need an engine."

And yeah, I can be like everybody else and suggest you a site to build a somewhat craptastic computer, or I can encourage you to buy all the parts seprate, and follow this little guide on assembling a computer:
    1. Screw the parts in the only humanly possible way.
    2. Plug all the cords in the only possible way they can fit into the ports.
    3. Install windows by following a foolproof sequence of pressing like 6 buttons.
    4. Install drivers by placing the Motherboard's Drive disc into the CD-ROM, and press "Install" when given the menu.

Whoa, that is really not hard. With a $2900 build, you should be getting a Geforce 8800GTX (will be released tomorrow, the 7th), an E'6600 (as mentioned in the builds), an Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard, 2x 1GB of Team memory (like the best memory around), and a lot of other fancy gizmos.

If you feel so intrigued to save money, have a better system, and don't mind devoting like 2-3 hours towards a cool computer, then ask me and other members to provide links to parts, and then all you have to do is click the link, press Add to Cart, and check out.

crappy CPU. Pentium Ds are just plain bad.

example given - a 1.86GHz Core 2 duo outperforms a 3.73GHz Pentium Extreme edition in many things,

    CORE 2 DUO > ATHLON 64 X2/FX > PENTIUM XE/D/4

athlon 64s do about 70% mroe work per clock cycle than a Pentium 4(so a 1.8GHz Athlon 64 slightly outperforms a 3.0GHz Pentium 4 overall)

Core 2 duos are about 90% more powerful per clock than Pentium Ds (so a 2.13GHz Core 2 duo out slightly performs a 4GHz Pentium D in most scenarios)

    http://xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/c...hootout_12.html

Intel stopped mainstreme development on the Pentiums 4/ds a long time ago, Core 2 has been their concentration for a while. THEY NO LONGER EVEN PRODUCE THEM obsolete and expensive to make.

now this might seem weird, the pentiums clearly have more Ghz. Note though that the rate at which transistors change isn't even a measurement of performance, it's just an isolated thing by which models of a certain processor type were compared by(which is entirely innacurate when comparing two diferent things)
do you beleive me when i say a Pentium III running at 100mhz can outperform a 150mhz Pentium 1 in almost any scenario? well scale this to current terms - a Pentium 4 which was designed for high GHz at moderate performance performance GHz is out performed by a chip designed for high performance per GHz and the new chip runs at almsot the same GHz as the old(with air cooling you could run a Core 2 at 3.8GHz and a Pentium 4 at 4.5 to put it in perspective)

    ==========================

    go off of this
    http://www.ibuypower.com/ibp/store/configurator.aspx?mid=191
    swap to the e6400
swap psu tot he enermax PSU
get a single 7900GT for the GFX card

and the rest you can do as you please.

I noted that you'de be paying monthly - again don't waste money just to waste money cut where needed. spending the little extra ehre and there to future proof your system is stupid for the most part. ESPECIALLY if you don't have the money to spend.(wiser to buy a moderate PC twice as often and have good bang/$ and the capacitry to sell the old system than to pay twice as much half as often for diminishing returns)

youre current system has a decent base could just tolerate some more RAM and a enw graphics card(and potentialy a new power supply to compensate for that)

if you just wanted to extend the life of the system and not break the bank(while still having a decent gaming experience)
get another gig of RAM, a radeon x1650 --- AGP and possibly a new power supply to acomadate this new stuff
