..And we\'re in November. Not too far away. I didn\'t get the impression he would be upgrading too much after this buy.. so I don\'t see why you would suggest an overpriced processor that costs $700ish and doesn\'t even offer the preformance of a $350 processor. Also, isn\'t there an AM3 socket coming out? Isn\'t the quad-core processor for AMD going to be AM3? You would need to upgrade to an AM3 socket later on to get the full use of the QC.
For that budget I'd buy both a laptop and desktop PC. Same build as JDP, but then with a 600+ W PSU and 8800GT/S/X. And savin' on some other parts.

Yeah, and what would be the point of that? You wouldn't be able to use DDR3 memory, so you might as well be upgrading the motherboard when you get an AM3 processor (btw, AM3 motherboards are due for late 2008... cool?), and since you want DDR3, you'll have to spend more on the RAM. So it's basicly a complete overhaul on the important parts. The Kentsfield works on some Intel BadaXe boards (with minor BIOS updates, etc), so why not get an E'6600 and then if he wants, go to a QX6800?

actually, by the end of the week for retail. They've allready shipped to retailers a bit back. think about ti this way... kentsfield today= lower prices ina week... still mantaining my support for the go e6600 and 8800GTS model...
But with Kentsfield you can play Alan Wake and Crysis Also apparently you don't get the same amount of performance, the qx6700 has 8mb cache, 4mb each pair of cores. Apparently if a pair of cores needs more cache it has to reach across to the other pair, slowing it down or something. I'm not entirely sure, but saw it in a tigerdirect video.
You don't think that with an E'6600 that you can play Alan Wake and Crysis? They are both the same core, just with two more of them. Practicaly any Dual-core processor can play the games anyway (think of it, my Pentium D 820 can run CS:S (which is yet to have multi-core support), so that is all being run on one core. I know CS:S isn't all that CPU heavy, but..)
You decide to who you listen, but seriously, it's not worth getting a qx6700 or x6800, a E6600 will be good enough, for the rest, watercooling is not needed, just get a good air cooler like the scythe ninja, infinity or tuniq tower 120. They'll get you >3.5 if needed. And don't get a premade. I know xelink, johndapunk, Master and AKW and prolly some more people will give you good parts.
Kentsfield is mainly a workstation processor for people who do video encoding and rendering. THE X6800 is still the best for gaming
