I always love to read things like this. I know it's sad, but it's also encouraging, and from one of the quotes it sounded like he was a Christian (the media likes to dim down things like that, so you can't always be sure), and being Christian myself it's all the more encouraging, knowing I get to meet this guy one day. I can honestly say that that would also be my first impulse, to protect them by doing that. Fearing death has never got anyone anything but death.
