    My sister needs a new computer now, so she'll be getting the one im currently using. Its some stock dell thing. So I'll be needing a better one.

    I don't know much about computers but here is what I use my computer for:
    1) MSN and Email
    2) Internet Surfing
    3) Gaming
    4) Homework
    5) Digital Art (Photoshop, c4d, 3ds)

    My current basic specs on this dell are:
    Dell Dimension DIM4700
    Intel ®
    Pentium ® 4 CPU 3.00 GHz
    2.99 GHZ 1.00GB Ram
    So something better than this would be great.

    Our max is $1000 CDN for monitor, keyboard, speakers, mouse, and processor.

    Those look so cool. But the specs it gives me, means nothing to me. I dont understand if 512 is supposed to run good for what I need.

    Can you also tell me what sort of things i should look for and what they do.

    IE. How much ram should i get. Whats a duo core L2 cache thing.

    On I buy power are those prices for just the processor or do i get monitor and keyboard and speakers??

    what games do you play? that should tell us how much ram u need.

    for processor, try to get an Intel Core 2 Duo. Ohhh, Xelink!!

    i think on ibp you can add that to your list...

    because there are plenty of people that do not have computer knowledge and think alienware provides excellent computers and they are willing to pay for it. :tongue:

    I can't tell you to much on specs and such, but I do know that it is NOT necesarry to have some $50 keyboard, speakers, or mouse. Im using a standard dell keyboard, which you can buy at any store for $10-15. Also, im using a $30 basic logitech mouse, and its fine for all FPS games. Speakers don't really matter that much, either you have them, or you dont. Sure, if you want surround sound on your PC, then you'll have to pay up. Just the standard speakers you get will be fine.

    DO NOT GET ALIENWERE, just cause they say they are the best gaming computer does not mean they are rofl. Get 1gig of memory, that should do you for awhile. You should get a Duo core computer also, why are you getting a new one anyway, your computer is pretty nice >.>. Mine blows rofl.

    for that price range, look into a system with an athlon x2. best bang/$ given your needs especially given the fact that you probably won't be overclocking much if any. if you can spring for it though go core 2 duo
    take a look below to get an idea of the performance of each chip and try to decide what works best given your needs
    http://xbitlabs.com/images/cpu/core2duo-shootout/average.png

    RAM look into either 1GB or 2gb worth - 2GB si best for the likes of BF2 FEAR and Oblivion along with newer games though 1GB would be fine for a while. the memory industry is currently price gouging so in 6 months i foresee RAM to cost half as much.

    video card, probably something like a GeForce 7600 GT(NOT THE GS, GS blows) if you don't need hardcore performance but want nice steedy game play with medium-high settings

    also replace the PSU on ibuypowers build if you go from them.

    =============
    and core 2 duo is intels replacement for the low performing pentiums.

    a 'dual-core' processor which means it can run twice as many things full speed(but not necessarily one thing double speed)

    ===========
    also don't listen to the people above half of them don't know ---- and don't know how to use terminology properly. aiden does have a point on speekers and keyboard though, msot keybaords are sufficient and a midend mouse is liekly sufficient(that won't stop me for dropping 50$ on a logitech G5 in the near future though)
