If your referring to "free" servers as private servers, those are not legal. But who cares lol, I used to play SavageL2 (best server ever) and I was a lvl 78 Spellhowler (I think thats the name). Full nightmare set
I am currently a Head Game Master (Managing events, trainee-Game Master's first contact point, supporting developement etc.) on a private server, well... I've been a Game Master on several private servers. Before that I played on the official servers (Been playing the game since it launched and before that (beta)) ^_^ There are some things you should keep in mind when picking a private server to play on. First: Private servers are alot different from official servers. Next to that there are two kinds of private servers, legal and non-legal. The legal ones are the Lineage 2 Java (L2J) servers, they are completely legal because the game was fully rewritten in Java. And the other ones use the official Lineage 2 databases wich got stolen from NCSoft. The big advantage of the illegal servers is that they don't have alot of problems running the server, because everything already was working as it should. Well that's not completely true, there are always some things that really have to be customized or fixed. The huge downside of the Lineage 2 Java servers is that they have to update their Lineage2 database everytime the developement team fixes something or changes stuff. They also have ALOT of problems with lag and can't hold as many people on one server. Also, they got alot of bugs, because everything needs to be coded in. Second: Every server has it's own rates, wich raise several things. 1. Experience you gain when killing a npc 2. Skillpoints by killing a npc 3. Adena amount per drop. 4. Item drop chances 5. Spoil chances (Dwarves get the abillity to "Spoil" an npc and then if succeeded "Sweep" it, by doing that they sometimes recieve impossible to get items by normal killing) For any one who is going to play this game for the first time and doesn't want to play on P2P servers. It would be smart if you tried a server with really low rates first, simply because that's the easiest way to really get to know the game (Otherwise you will be already lvl 25 before you even find out how to even start a quest or get new skills etc.) Servers with low rates would be kinda in the 2x - 10x range. Ofcourse each server is always different from the other one, but these are the main things to keep in mind when picking a private server. Greetz, Miyo
I run my own Lineage 2 server, and it Pwns All other Games, and it dosn't get boring, the only time it will get boring if your constantly looking at your expiriance and and think of leveling, Don't do that! Just join a party with a friend maby more, and level without paying attention to your exp only your hp. If you concentrate on your exp, you will think its too slow but its not.(when you level dont think of exp or anything, just , talk, or, somthing)

Good advice Miyoko; the first private server I played had 10x rates. It was awhile before I got my character up to high level and got some good gear but i did learn things about the game along the way. Nice thing about this game is that it has a nice Tutorial after you create your character in your starter town. It tells you what to do and and when you can go learn new skills and such. Just watch out for any players that are red when you are leveling (their names will be red instead of white)
