I have this problem also, at first I thought it was an overheating problem, so i put in a new fan, but it still restarts/freezes up.

i also reformat when i am too lazy to scan...

could be PSU, or perhaps bad RAM or a bad board or a bad CPU or a bad GFX card...

here is an idea run a few stability tests liek trthos and se what happens.

Most likely the CPU over heating, do you get a BSOD when it restarts?

umm eformatting effectively removes ALL DATA off a partition. it would have to be one hell of a worm for it to be able to mantain enough data through a reformat to resurect itself and then run a VERY COMPLICATED set of alrogithms to recover it's own lost data...

if ti was that advanced, i don't think a patch would do too much...

    Hmm...

I suggest you check out the Power Supply Unit. Most likely since it just randomly happening every 20 minutes or so. But, before replacing you're PSU, you should check the RAM for any types of oxidation and also check the RAM through the BIOS.

In the worse case scenario, it's your PSU!

could be a very very very very tiny virus that is capable of fitting in the mbr :P or it could create another partition, and then if the user doesnt check, then could leave the new partition alone whilest they reformat and it wouldnt solve anything :P
