my sister got a compaq at office depot for 400 bucks

    250 gb hard drive

    1gb ram

    lightsribe cd/dvd burner

its really nice and so cheap, i have a compaq right now ( really crappy one spec wise) but it performs like a alienware

i doubt it would perform liek an alienware unless it is similarly configured and you aren't doing anything intensive.

remember it's what's under the hood that determines performance though, not name.

for your needs a 300$ cheep + a ram uprade would also be a possibility.

ddr333 coss more than ddr400 beleive it or not... so i am willing to bet it is 400. DDR400 has been out for like 3 years now.
