Although plausable, it's an urban legend. I heard about this about seven years ago from a girl who claimed men did this to women as they walked to their cars alone at night, although it was to rape them, not to carjack them.

Oh, and I was once carjacked, but no severed tendons, just a gun nozzle at my temple.

 

This is a real threat this has been going around firestations and police departments.
