Alright I have an site that I run for a friend, www.uegda.com.

I'm doing an update now, because I'm not liking the layout anymore, seems too flat for me, plus its only blue.
(no offense gamerenders, you big blue forum)

Here is what I'm thinkin' right now:

    http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/8071/openkj0.gif

    Nice and simple.

There is something about it that is bugging me though, I think it might be the buttons or the banner but I can't put my finger on it...

Anyways, I just needed some fresh eyes to take a look at it.

Also, I'm thinkin' about coding in flash, what's your opinion about that?

Please, only answer the flash site question if you have experience in that.

I'm just wondering how difficult coding it and putting it into flash would be, and where I could get help with it?

    Thanks for reading,
    Whits

Haha, I can tell that from your sig. I don't think shiny really fits the layout though, thanks for the suggestion though, I'll keep in in mind as I change it.

    Any other suggestions from anyone?

    maybe a 2 column layout?

columns always make stuff interesting ;)

also, throw in more blues and greens, so it is all greys and black ;)

and in regard to your flash request, don't. Flash is an eyesore and is annoying, plus you have to learn actionscript plus you have to learn how to make actual flash stuff, too much work for so little. But if you want, little things are nice, but with that template, flash can only make it worse :P

If I made it in flash, I really wouldn't change much. Nothing flashy, no music or anything.

I think it would be nice for it to have clean page transitions that wouldnt have to load a seperate page.

I feel bad shooting down every opinion I'm getting, :-\ I guess I'm more set in my ways than I though.

In that case, just make the header say flash or the menu bar. Also, regarding the design I would maybe try make the menu bar a bit more attractive and appealing. Maybe add a nice gradient or a gloss effect. Something to give the template a little more feel.

Though good luck with your site, hope it all works out good :D

If the first template was to flat for you, then you havn't made a real improvement on your new one. Another problem is that the template is quite dull.

Try using slightly nicer tones and use colours effectivley. Maybe give the navigation bar a nice subtle gradient and get some contrast in there.

There was a slight gradient on the navigation bar, but now when I look it it, it's really hard to see. Guess I didn't think of it because subconsciously I knew I had done it.

I'll think about changing up the colors a tiny bit and adding a few more touches of color throughout it also.

    Thanks!

    Dont
    use
    flash

OK, now that that's been said :)

Gray gradient on nav is a bit boring.

Left align that content, I don't think it looks nice center aligned.

Try adding some headers to the text, in a different color to add contrast and a little more pizzazz.

Also, think about adding a gradient to the background behind the box.

    I like the logo however.

    Copyright?

And since your missing a copyright, try to give that a good contract to the rest of things when you make it.

    Again...

    Don't
    use
    flash

If you want it to page transition seamlessly, thats a job for AJAX.

    Haha, alright, good-bye Flash...

    Thanks for the ideas,

Glad you like the logo! The layout is a wip so I didn't get a few things done, the copyright being one. Guess it's kinda important, especially w\o a watermark.

Hell, I'd probably be happy if someone liked it enough to steal it though, lol.

What do you mean about adding headers in the text? Do you mean just highlighting certain words? (Not literally highlighting, but making them bigger and\or a different color so they stand out?)

I'm going to mess around with the text alignment also, and see how it looks. Maybe throw in a picture if it looks good.

I changed a few things around:
    Original: http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/1365/openut0.gif
    New: http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/5938/open2ya3.gif

I'll mess around with what you said about headers and alignment, and think about coding...

    Thanks!

By headers I mean title parts of the text, and make them stick out. (don't do it if it isn't going to come out well)

You could highlight the beginning of the paragraphs. It'd really be awesome if the :first-word (I think that was it) pseudo-class worked in IE, then you could do it quite easily. Alas, IE blows...

:first-line and :firt-letter, but then you could wrap then first word with a generic tag like <span> and then set a style for that, or you could use :first-child, but like the rest of the pseudo classes, they don't work in IE and your <span> has to be he first child tags, of course
