if you want to be a designer then your gonna have to step up your game doing large art in many mediums , learning many types of programs , websites layouts coding etc , although its a ever growing business the competition is always tuff its not an easy field to get in to at all its also a plus if you can draw and have ahuge imagination that will get you far alone but my advice to you would be stop with sigs go to large art learn other programs cos lets face it sigs wont ever sell
If your good, get a Scholarship. The pay as a freelance designer is ok but if you do want to get into the 100ks etc. you need to set up your own company and business. Like Gurly said, start focusing on large pieces more and using different mediums and practice things like CD covers and digital painting. Graphic Design is a much rising business and the pay is good, if your very good, takes quite a lot of devotion.
If chose graphics designer because i love designing, cos when i got into making sigs then i joined deviant art and game renders, i see really well made arts by using photoshop, and as i got into making these stuffs by tutorials and drawing i got into graphics even more. I wanna buy a wacom, that will help me practice more on digital paintings so i can make BGs for Disney Movies.
Ooh yeah. The most money in Graphic Design is probaly going to be in the 3D area. Dont mean like all the Abstract 3D work people do, I mean like the people on CGSociety, using Maya etc.
gtfo, if you don't know anything about it please dont give him "advice". Movie/dvd cover type things are just a way to go with graphics, there are so many more ways. It's just what you want.
