I am making a simple wallpaper and I added a white to light gray fade, but the gradiant is coming up with poor quality. What file should it be for a smooth gradiant? JPEG? GIF? PNG?

png would be best i believe but it should work perfectly in jpg also.

if ur using ps make sure when you export ur jpg that ur quality setting is high enough that it doesnt look like crap.

png but you can't really use it as a wallpaper because it messes up the icon text, jpeg high quality should work fine.

when a pic doesn't have many details a high quality jpg is sometimes actually bigger then a png

i say use a very high quality jpg if it has a lot of colors and details but png if it doesn't....they should both have the same quality anyway
