i just saw a episode of Pysch and in it they were re-inacting a battle from the civil war era... and i just realized.. i never saw one of these.. ever..... i've seen tv shows where the characters dress up for them or w/e... simpsons.. everything seems to do it actually.. anyways... anyone know what time of year these things usually take place? like.. hopefully fall....
"states rights" was the south's excuse to have slavery, the whole reason they wanted states to have more power was because if they have more power, the government couldn't tell them they couldn't have slaves....so yes, it was about slaves
They wanted to leave the Union, WHICH they are allowed to do and they did do. War broke out, Abe Lincoln wanted them back because it would hurt the Unions economy and wanted slaves gone because it hurt the norths economy and would balance everyone out and place them on a level playing field. So it's a little more than slaves and states rights here.
Legally, they were not allowed to leave thus why Lincoln fought to 'preserve' the union. Out of the 50 states, only one is allowed to withdraw from the United States - guess which one it is? Texas Since we entered the union on our own terms.
^that's very true. WHen it all falls down in place, you can trace everything back to my people, the slaves.
wrong. the entire reason for the emancipation proclemation was europe. europe had already freed all thier slaves, and looked down on the US b/c they hadnt. lincoln wanted support from europe, and the emance proc was kinda to say to europe " we're civilized too! " but mostly, the war was about states rights. and even tho im from above the mason dixon line, i really gota side with the south on this one. not on the hole slavery issue, but on the states rights issue
But according to Jefferson, who wrote the constitution every state has the right to secceed from the union if they saw fit. After the Civil War though congress changed the laws on seccession, making it almost totally illegal. Technically the American Revolution was itself a seccession since a revolution is overthrowing the current government and we wanted to seperate from the British Crown. And didn't every state join under their own terms really? I'm not really sure about that.
I think the north had no right to fight the south bc the south have there own rights. They have the right to pursue their happiness.
Probably the only reason people say slavery wasn't the main point.. is because they want to make themselves feel better or something. But the only reason the SOUTH attack the North first was because of slavery that was the main reason nothing about economy and this BS you people keep refering to.[EDIT] But, i agree that there were other reasons just slavery was the main one.
No it was not, damnit all. Slavery was the needle that broke the camel's back. It was NOT the main point. We wanted the right to chose whether or not we wanted slaves.
