Okay, to day i spent most of the day thinking( no not i really, i woke up, ate food, went to a party, then tought about this ) about how rappers sing about "bustin a cap in that other nigga's ass" and "pimpin all them hoes", i really dont get it, why is it cool to kill another guy for "turf" or slap around a girl because she wont make money for you be offering strange men sexual pleasure.

And then i tought about how this music has a bad influence on kids and teenagers, because i have a lot of friends who really thinks they are ghetto,. One of my best friends boyfriend slapped her around because she wouldnt have sex with him. I meen this music can really twist the mind of people.. But then again alot of Rock music has these suicidel toughts, and i listen to alot of rock music, and i have alot of rock friends, and they are pretty suicidel and if i where to loose one of them over music i would be really bummed out.

Whats your opinion on how music effects the society?

    Rules of discussion,
    Respect other peoples opinions,
    Be mature,
And for gods sake dont take any bad comments to the music style you like as a personal attack on you.

First off, much music has been suicidal and promoted 'bad things' throughout the years (mostly underground, death metal etc), but I'm going to address mainstream since that's what you're inclined towards I'm guessing.

Well as we now live in the days of *sniff* post-post Grunge, when Nirvana broke through in 1991 with the start of dourist rock becoming the norm and the culture. At that time, just because the rock was all deperessing and self pitied didn't make it a problem to most people, it simply just connected with social outcasts more. Now with the original emo bands like 'Drive like Jehu' gone, and this stereotype emo has evolved, it really seems like that music is just wrong at times. Many teens apparently can't think straight and in times of stress, confine themselves with this type of music. It can be dangerous and though it's just made fun of as 'cutting music', it's a problem. The meaning of rock music has always been mostly what can sell, (with the exception of some rockers who could carve out a name for themselves...which hasn't happened probably SINCE Nirvana/Pearl Jam/Soundgarden etc..), it just so happens that what's popular now is STILL self-pitying music which can be dangerous to people's minds imo.

To rap...to put it simply, rap has gone a far and sad way from classic Public Enemy and Dr. Dre, it's the new thing...that has been for the past 8ish years or so. There is a line between dressing gangsta and acting it, most of the mainstream rappers are just fakers anyway...and the music they have is probably the most severe on our cutlure. To put it plainly...I hope there will be some breakthrough artist that can smash the charts and start a new trend...grunge is long dead and gone and mainstream rap is a joke, that really doesn't help anyone (if you say it's just 'for fun' than why are so many people following this music?).

rap is just everyones fantasy for a lawless america where you can "pimp yo hoes n bust caps" all day long. load a crap, the sooner is gone the quicker i can convince my friend hes from suberbia like me and not a ghetto thug.

and wit yer "rock" genre, maybe im just too apithetic, but i dont get why everyone goes all emo n stuff. i mean, i listen to metal, and i dont go all black hair cuttin open goats. idk, maybe im not desperate enuf, but im a cynical, pessemistic, apithetic guy, and i got no problems. life is great.

to yall emo kids: listen to some metal, drink some JOLT, play some UT2k4, you'll be back in shape in no time.

some ppl just need to get off thier pity pot, flush it, and get on with life.

music never has bad influence on kids. The singers/song writers are mature adults who write/sing about whatever they want. If 50 cent says he shot someone then he did. A kid doesnt have to go out and shoot someone. the kid is just not mature enough to listen to that kind of music if he does go and shoots someone.

Listen here's the thing, any style of music can relay an inappropriate message. Wether it's rap, rock, punk, hip-hop, pop...any style can and has.

And with that any music can have a positive and healthy message (well I'm not sure about emo really, no offense).

All in all it depends on the ignorance of the people listening to the music and seeing how America has been dumbed down by realty tv and countless lies, there are plenty of ignorant people and that's a big problem. There is also the problem that there are uneducated people, by choice and not by choice, who listen to this music and take it to heart and think it's how to be cool and think that's what the world wants from them.

People don't often ask themselves "What do I want from the world?"

So honestly with music influencing people it all depends on the ignorance of people or maybe I should say awareness of the world around them. If they are aware of the world then maybe the music might not affect them, if the world they see is tv, paparzzi, and poverty then maybe it will.

I fully agree with you, i know people who think they're gangsters.
Its terrible, they act, think and even talk and walk like they are gangsters. Although most, if not all, grew up in a lovely neighboorhood without any violence.
Its so lame tbh, they all think they're cool and tuff, while they're just joke.

I listen to Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, Pennywise.. and i like the music, but i won't let it effect my life into a negative vibe.

Listening to rap is okay, but don't think you are one of those "gangster-pimps"

Music should be something that triggers something inside you to feel a certain emotion, thats why i only listen to music that does that.

Music doesnt make people suicidal or anything, which is why I hate it when people like Marilyn Manson get blamed for things like the Columbine shootings. It's not that music makes us the way we are, we just become those people anyway and use the music to define ourself.

I've never seen an incident where a posh school boy has been played some Black Sabbath and suddenly gone on a murdering rampage.

so by the looks of things, you could describe as a combo of emo metal and goth listener. I honeslty hate rapas a music(just my opion no further deal)
the whole life-style around i dun ike either, but its a free world. and every genre has its onw lifestyle, wich is eften hated by the other.

my advice be as you feel best and listesn to music you LIKE<----

lots of people think im suicidle cuase of all the music i listen, well im not, ok i might be a bit more depressed more often then "average". but the songs i listen too show bad side of life, and how rare it is, i learn to apreciated it more and enjoy the good things in live i have.

its just that good things differ

    With the first post...

I think that you are stereotyping music. 1/2 of the Rock / Metal I listen to has nothing to do with suicide. Actually, I might have 1 or 2 out of my entire playlist (of Thousands) that might say somthing about dying. Most of Metal and hard rock is not about hate or suicide. But a love of somthing. A Love Of Someone. A Love of Music. Ect. Unless you are listening to Emo rock, which might have some suicidal lyrics, there is nothing to do with suicide in _MOST_ songs.

With rap, I dont like listening to Gangster rap. Again, most rap isnt about shooting people. Unless you are talking about the Sub, Gangster Rap. Most of these Genre's can be broken down. So it is not fair for you to stereotype one of these.

    Just my 2 cents.

Well, i agree with you on the part where it has a major influence on the youth. They're like "Yeah i listen to sime grimey fizzle dizzle and i wear a tracksuit because they do", And "Yeah im a pimp i can go and treat women like ----".

But then there's other sort of music which brings you down or maybe feel suicidal. And there is music that makes you feel hyper or bouncy.
I listen to anything from Punk etc to Death/Black metal. I admit some is depressing but i don't look at it in that way i just look at it as a good song or something.

I think, if you're looking for music that doesn't make you feel anything like those things ^ then just listen to something neutral like The kooks, the killers, kaiser cheifs etc.

Music is actually one of the most psychologically influencing things there are.
-Back in the Dark Ages people used to use Drums to march in wars and played harp and guitar variations for dancing.
    - In the 60's music helped to define an entire generation of Drug Use, Free Sex, Peace, and love.
    - In South Africa during Apartheid, Protest Music was one of the most inspiring parts of the resolution.
-Punk and Emo styles have created a rather large group of manically depressed children who thinks their life sucks and no one understands them.

And then I come to one of the most effective music of our generation, rap. Rap went from cool sounding beats in the beggining to using the glorification of drugs, gangsta life, pimps, whores, and all sorts of other questionable practices. This is not full proof but a sad fact. It makes me feel worse when I hear 5 year old kids singing along to Eminem and Kanye West, curse words and all. Its up to each person to listen to music a thier dicretion, without following blindly in the ideas of dumb people.

Personally I like alot of Death Metal, but in no way does that make me want to go on a killing spree. :P

Rap was good when it meant something, back around the 80's, all this 'thug' ----e is what's wrong with society, if this didn't exist there wouldn't be a reason for teens nowadays to smoke, do drugs drink alchohol, mug people bleh it's just stupid...

rock is good music, with instruments and actuall singing, although i don't know what happened with emo's i mean yeah appricate music just don't kill yourself over it...or just get theropy...k?
