What exactly is the point of GR? Is there more to it than just improving your gfx skills and learning new things? Is there something I am missing?

Yeah, probably something like that, or if you want to sell siggies, learn rendering, get renders, etc..
Its for game renders! Naw its just fun, but it does give a lot of renders/tuts which helpful, and the cred system is pretty fun.
I see it as an opportunity to do 100% noob owning. There are also renders 'n' stuff but I prefer to just own teh noobies

I wouldn't say all over the world maybe only those who can understand/ speak english. And i also say resorces
hang out with people with the same interests, have fun, get better at graphics. and the whole credit system is kind of a game. you play the game and make more credits and use them to make more credits.
