Help Me Please

im trying out this tutorial i found but half-way through it
this happens


i don't really understand. i need to get into brush strokes. but it won't let me. please help.

 

create a new layer, then go to image-> apply image. From there you should be able to do it

 

it didn't work.

do i need to change the settings for the apply image screen?

right now i have it so:
layer - merged
channel - rgb
blending - multiply
opacity - 100%

and the invert, preserve transparancy, and mask... checkboxes are all unchecked.

 

you need to make sure you are in 8bit mode and not 16 bit mode under image>mode.
